Rain ruins Warwickshire hopes

A rapid half-century by Warwickshire’ left hander Jim Troughton went to waste when rain ended Lancashire’s reply in the Friends Provident t20 clash at Edgbaston

ScorecardNathan McCullum picked up 3 for 31•Getty ImagesA rapid half-century by Warwickshire’ left hander Jim Troughton went to waste when rain ended Lancashire’s reply in the Friends Provident t20 clash at Edgbaston.Openers Tom Smith and Paul Horton made three runs in a solitary over from Neil Carter before the match was abandoned with each side taking one point to stay in contention in a congested North group. A pitch which produced 415 runs in the previous match against Durham again rewarded the batsmen as Troughton, with 66 from 37 balls, took the Bears close to 200 for the second time in three days. The hosts closed on 196 for 9 after a rampaging start in which Carter hit Glen Chapple for six, six, four, four off successive deliveries while making 39 in an opening partnership of 54 from 4.5 overs. The all-rounder crashed six fours and two sixes in 15 balls before he was caught at backward point off Sajid Mahmood, but the early surge was sustained as the home side reached 114 for 2 at the halfway point.Although Ian Bell quickly fell to Nathan McCullum, making room to carve the New Zealander to deep cover, opener Jonathan Trott (42) and Troughton also put on 54 prior to a middle-order slump. Troughton’s charge to 50 off 26 balls included 20 runs in four balls from Steven Croft before Lancashire found a way to check the onslaught.Tom Smith, the seventh bowler tried by captain Chapple, benefited from Trott’s skier to Stephen Moore at cover as Warwickshire fell back to 131 for 5. McCullum needed only three balls to dislodge Darren Maddy and Rikki Clarke, the latter stunned by Smith’s leaping one-handed overhead catch at long-off.Off-spinner McCullum’s figures were 3-0-13-3 until his final over cost 18 runs and James Anderson, on release from England commitments, finished with 2 for 38 after conceding 14 in three balls to Chris Woakes.Warwickshire were only two short of equalling the highest total against Lancashire in the competition when Troughton was run out off the last ball, having hit four sixes and four fours in the highest of his seven half-centuries in this format.

West Brom must sign Okay Yokuslu

Having lost their latest Championship game 1-0 against relegation strugglers Derby County on Monday, some West Brom fans were not shy in sharing their criticism of Baggies boss Valerien Ismael and his post-match comments saying that the players need to take responsibility for the defeat.

With this in mind, the upcoming January transfer window could give Ismael the opportunity to not only strengthen his squad but also get some Baggies fans back on his side with a few exciting transfers.

One deal that Ismael could look to complete which would surely delight a lot of West Brom fans and boost their chances of securing promotion would be to pull off the signing of former Baggies loanee Okay Yokuslu.

Labelled a “forceful” player earlier this year by West Brom podcaster Adrian Goldberg, the £6.3m-rated Turkey international has only made six appearances for Celta Vigo in La Liga, all of them coming off the  bench. That would suggest that he isn’t an important figure for the Galician outfit and could be better off making a move to somewhere like Albion where he could get regular playing time.

With a recent report claiming that the fan favourite midfielder would be willing to make a return to the Midlands after enjoying his six-month spell on loan there last season, this could be just what Ismael needs to not only strengthen his midfield but also bring some positivity back for the supporters.

In his 16 Premier League appearances for the Baggies last term, Yokuslu’s performances earned him an overall season rating of 6.96/10, making him their joint-highest rated player alongside Matheus Pereira according to WhoScored. That shows how much of an impact he had at the club and suggests why many fans would surely be delighted to see him return.

Taking this into account and the reports that Robert Snodgrass could be on his way out of the club next month, West Brom should do all they can to bring Yokuslu back to The Hawthorns to see if he can fire them back to the Premier League by the end of the campaign.

Journalist drops big Traore to Spurs update

As per reliable reporter Matt Law of The Telegraph, Tottenham talks are ongoing over the transfer of Wolves winger Adama Traore but there’s been a twist to the tale.

The Lowdown: Conte eyes Traore re-mould…

To solve his right-wing back problem, Spurs boss Antonio Conte has earmarked the potential signing of Traore as fix and intends to re-mould the 25-year-old in that position (The Athletic).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A natural forward, Traore will be used as a wing-back in Conte’s three-at-the-back system with the Spain international looking ‘pretty likely’ to be his first signing at N17.

This comes as Wolves are prepared to let him leave for £20 million, but according to Law, Spurs aren’t quite going to oblige.

The Latest: Spurs hopeful of loan…

According to his information, Tottenham are now hoping to sign Traore on an initial loan but with an obligation to buy, with talks still ongoing over his move.

As the attacker enters the final year of his deal at Molineux, it is also believed that they ‘may be forced to consider’ their proposal.

Tottenham’s transfer funds are apparently in ‘limited supply’, forcing them to weigh loan deals and potential 2022 free agents.

The Verdict: Good deal…

If Wolves oblige and agree to Tottenham’s revised terms, landing the Premier League ace on an initial loan would certainly be an astute piece of business from sporting director Fabio Paratici and the club.

Called the ‘perfect fit’ for Spurs by pundit Noel Whelan, Traore has overshadowed every Tottenham man in the Premier League this season when it comes to completed dribbles per 90 (WhoScored).

As well as this, the winger is still only 25 and possesses plenty of pace and skill – potentially making him a real asset for Conte as Tottenham’s boss aims to kickstart the rebuild.

Watson leaves Sixers, joins Brisbane Heat

Shane Watson has signed a three-year deal with the Brisbane Heat on the second-last day of the initial Big Bash League contract window

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jul-2012Shane Watson has signed a three-year deal with the Brisbane Heat on the second-last day of the initial Big Bash League contract window. Watson, who is originally from Queensland, was on the Sydney Sixers’ roster last year and although his international commitments are expected to limit his BBL availability, he said he was keen to work with the Heat coach Darren Lehmann whenever possible.”Boof [Lehmann] is a great bloke and has made a really big impact as a coach since he went down that path,” Watson said. “I know the Queensland boys have really enjoyed their cricket under him and it seems a really great fit for me to join the Heat and get to work with him.”My priority will be to play as much cricket for Australia as I can this summer but the BBL is an exciting thing to be a part of. I love T20 cricket and I’m looking forward to being back home playing in front of friends and family.”There were several other moves on Thursday, with the Melbourne Renegades hitting back at the Adelaide Strikers after they poached Andrew McDonald and Shaun Tait from the Renegades over the past fortnight. The Renegades have picked up three men who performed solidly for the Strikers last season: Daniel Harris, who was the Strikers’ second-leading run scorer; Aaron O’Brien, who was their top wicket taker; and the batsman Tom Cooper. In other moves, the Sydney Thunder lost Doug Bollinger to the Hobart Hurricanes, while the Thunder picked up Ryan Carters from the Renegades and Cameron Borgas from the Strikers, and signed Jason Floros. The wicketkeeper-batsman Daniel Smith, who played for the Thunder last summer, has moved to the Sixers. The Sixers also re-signed Mitchell Starc and Nic Maddinson, while the Melbourne Stars were happy to lock in six key bowlers: James Pattinson, Clint McKay, Jackson Bird, James Faulkner, John Hastings and Clive Rose. The Hurricanes, as well as signing Bollinger, confirmed that Timm van der Gugten would be part of their squad this year. The Strikers picked up the allrounder Michael Neser from the Brisbane Heat and the batsman Nathan Reardon from the Renegades. The eight teams have until the end of Friday to confirm at least 14 players for the 2012-13 tournament.

Gautam Gambhir takes Kotla wicket to task

Gautam Gambhir, the Delhi Daredevils captain, joined the criticism against the Feroz Shah Kotla pitch, saying that he prefered playing away games since the wicket at his home venue was not the best in the country

Cricinfo staff12-Apr-2010Gautam Gambhir, the Delhi Daredevils captain, joined the criticism against the Feroz Shah Kotla pitch after his side’s seven-wicket defeat against Kings XI Punjab, saying that he prefered playing away games since the wicket at his home venue was not the best in the country.”I personally would prefer to play away matches as a batsman and bowler. Wickets in Bangalore and Kolkata and other parts of India are better than what we have here for Twenty20,” Gambhir told PTI after his side’s seven-wicket defeat against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday. “It is difficult to play shots and score runs here. You don’t get value for your shots here.”Delhi’s powerful batting line-up collapsed to 111 all out on the crumbling wicket, with legspinner Piyush Chawla picking up 2 for 16. Fellow spinners Ramesh Powar and Yuvraj Singh proved tough to get away, and between them the spinners picked up 3 for 55 in 12 overs. Irfan Pathan also made good use of the slow pitch, picking 3 for 24.The Kotla wicket has come under the scanner ever since the fifth ODI between India and Sri Lanka in December, which was abandoned due to the unfit playing surface. Despite getting a one-year international ban, the Kotla was allowed to host IPL matches since the tournament does not come under the purview of ICC. Throughout the tournament, the pitch has favoured teams that bat first, prompting Bangalore captain Anil Kumble to term it as “not ideal for Twenty20″.”The toss is very crucial on such a track. I think 185 was too much for us to chase in this kind of wicket. It is not the ideal wicket for Twenty20,” Kumble had said after his side lost their game at the Kotla by 37 runs. On that occasion, Gambhir admitted his side had been lucky to win the toss. All four night games so far at the Kotla this year have been won comfortably by the team batting first.

West Brom fans flock to Dike claim

Flocking to Twitter, many West Bromwich Albion fans have had something to say about a transfer claim involving Orlando City forward Daryl Dike.

Valerien Ismael’s side are looking to continue their fight for a bounce straight back up to the Premier League and currently lie third in the Championship standings, six points off an automatic place.

The Baggies are looking to address one key area above all in January to maintain their push for promotion, the striker department (Joseph Masi), with Ismael even admitting to the press that ‘things are in place behind the scenes’ in terms of identifying targets (Express and Star).

Sharing an update on West Brom’s push for a striker, Birmingham Live reporter Joe Chapman detailed who they could swoop for in January as he answered questions in a Q&A.

According to the reporter, forward Dike, who enjoyed a prolific spell on loan at Barnsley last season, may well become a target and you cannot rule him out as a signing in the winter window.

As per his information, West Brom would be ‘pushing very hard’ to get a player like the 21-year-old given their financial constraints and the fact Ismael is a ‘big fan’.

Baggies fans react…

Flocking to this striker claim, some Baggies supporters have had mixed reviews on social media despite the fact they could swoop for a forward with a prolific 11 goals in 19 MLS appearances over 2021 (Transfermarkt).

He’s also been called ‘ruthless’ by one of his former coaches in the United States, George Gelnovatch (ScoreCiti.com).

However, while some are excited at the prospect of signing Dike, others hold reservations over whether they can actually get it done.

Celtic interested in Niko Gießelmann

Celtic are interested in a deal to bring Niko Gießelmann to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by German publication SportBild (via Sport Witness), who claim that the 1.FC Union Berlin left-back has caught the eye of Ange Postecoglou’s side, as well as a number of clubs in England.

The report goes on to state that Celtic are “keen” to sign the 30-year-old, whose contract at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei is set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

Celtic’s next Tierney

Considering just how impressive Gießelmann has been in Germany this season, in addition to Celtic currently lacking a considerable amount of strength in depth at left-back, the defender would certainly appear to be a fantastic signing for Postecoglou to get over the line in the winter transfer window.

Indeed, over his 14 Bundesliga appearances this term, the £3.5m-rated man has scored three goals, registered three assists and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as taking an average of one shot and making 1.4 key passes per game.

The former Hannover 96 player has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 0.8 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 1.3 clearances and winning 3.5 duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the £7.9k-per-week left-back – who is also capable of playing in a more advanced role on the left-wing –  average a SofaScore match rating of 7.13, ranking him as Union’s third-best performer in the league.

Furthermore, when discussing his recent run of goalscoring form in the Bundesliga, Gießelmann said: “As a youngster, I played up front or in attacking midfield more often, and in my early days at Greuther Fürth, I played as a left midfielder more often. So I probably still have a bit of striker’s blood in me. That’s showing a bit at the moment.”

Indeed, when taking into account his positional versatility, as well as his obvious attacking inclination, the 30-year-would very much appear to be a left-back in the mould of Kieran Tierney, a player who directly contributed to a whopping 45 goals during his time with Celtic.

As such, considering Postecoglou’s lack of depth in the position, Gießelmann would indeed appear to make an excellent addition for Celtic this winter, not to mention a cheap one – with his contract in Germany running out in just sixth months time.

Rangers set to appoint Dave Vos

Glasgow Rangers are set to appoint Dave Vos as the latest member of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s backroom team at Ibrox.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Dutch publication De Telegraaf (via the Daily Record), who claim that Vos has informed Ajax he will be leaving the club to become one of the 46-year-old manager’s assistants at the Premiership side, following the likes of Roy Maakay, Arno Phillips and Yori Bosschart to Ibrox.

The Record go on to state that the deal for Vos has been brokered by Van Bronckhorst’s agent Guido Albers, with the former Ajax U18 coach putting pen to paper on a contract until either 2024 or 2025.

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how highly rated Vos is as a coach, the news that the 38-year-old has left his role in the Netherlands in favour of a switch to Glasgow is sure to have fans of the club buzzing.

Indeed, Vos is reported to have received his initial training at the Central Institute Training Sports Leaders – following in the footsteps of the prestigious dutch coach Louis van Gaal – and subsequently studied at the Cruyff University, before passing his Professional Football Coach Course last year – with De Telegraaf dubbing him an “ambitious trainer.”

The coach then gained employment at Ajax, working his way up through the club’s various age groups and ultimately being appointed as the U18 manager at the start of this season.

As such, the appointment of the 38-year-old very much looks to be an incredibly exciting one for all involved with Rangers, as Vos has helped to develop a number of exceptionally talented players in the famous Ajax youth system in recent years, something that he will undoubtedly be looking to replicate in Scotland.

If he achieves that in his new surroundings, he’s sure to be a massive hit in the Premiership alongside van Bronckhorst in what could end up becoming a dream combination at Ibrox.

Leeds: Journalist makes Dest claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has made a claim on Leeds United and possible move for Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest.

The Lowdown: Dest links

Victor Orta and Jesse Marsch met earlier this month to discuss the profile of player they want to target this summer ahead of the latter’s first full season in charge.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Dest was linked with a move to Yorkshire prior to those talks, with sources revealing that the USA international is on Orta’s radar alongside RB Salzburg’s Brenden Aaronson.

Dest is currently under contract at the Nou Camp until 2025 and has made 69 appearances for the Catalan giants, turning out at full-back and on the wing on both sides.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

Talking to This is Futbol, O’Rourke said that Leeds will be on the hunt for a right-back and name-checked Dest, suggesting it could be a ‘big deal’.

“They’ll be looking at a right-back, I think, as well. Sergino Dest has been mentioned possibly as that one which will be a big deal for Leeds.”

The Verdict: Ayling replacement?

By the looks of it, the Whites will be ‘looking’ to bring in a right-back over the summer, which could result in Luke Ayling becoming second-choice at Elland Road.

Ayling has grown with the club since joining in 2016 and has made 217 appearances for the Whites. However, he will be entering the final 12 months of his contract in the summer, where he will turn 31.

He reportedly wants to stay at Leeds for the rest of his career, however, he may have to accept dropping down to the bench going forward, should the Whites land someone like Dest over the coming months.
