Anderson eager to mark Old Trafford return

James Anderson did his bit to help Old Trafford get the facelift it needed and now England’s 21st century Statham can help England overcome their third Test jitters

James Anderson summed it up in typically understated style. “It’s quite strange saying state of the art and Old Trafford in the same sentence,” he said. But the most fraught decade in Lancashire’s history will officially end on Thursday when Old Trafford stages the third Investec Test against Australia. If things go well for Anderson, he could be part of an England side that retains the Ashes on his home ground. If they do, Lancashire should give him a replica Ashes urn filled from one of the many skips that have surrounded this ground over the past couple of years. But being on the cusp of Ashes success has not sat easily with England in recent series. In 2009, They were 1-0 up when they came a cropper at Headingley, losing by an innings as they were rushed out for 102 by Peter Siddle and Stuart Clark. Two years later, they were also one up when they arrived in Perth and faltered against Mitchell Johnson on a hot streak. If Australia do respond again, the story begs for David Warner to do it. In disgrace after punching Joe Root in a Birmingham bar, loaned out to Australia A to regain form in southern Africa, and back with a big hundred under his belt: all the elements of the story are there – apart from about five hours batting.”He’s a very dangerous player,” Anderson said. “He’s somebody we looked at the start of the series and we’ll look at him again this week. He can be dangerous, especially if it’s a flat pitch and not swinging so that’s something we’ll be very conscious of.”Assuming England are unchanged – Kevin Pietersen trained on Tuesday – seven players will have been present in Perth and six at Headingley. This side will certainly be forewarned about lapses of performance.”In the last two Ashes series the third Test has been a stumbling block for us so we have to make a conscious effort that we don’t look too far ahead – don’t look at the outcome before concentrating on the smaller bits that will help us win that game,” Anderson said. “We are not looking too far ahead and we won’t look too far past the first hour on Thursday.”Most of the guys in the dressing room have experience of what happened at Headingley – and Perth as well when we played out there last time. Hopefully we can use that so it doesn’t happen again.”Anderson’s assessment of Australia was somewhat kinder than that which has been commonly seen in the media. “It’s been tough so far,” he said. “We narrowly won at Trent Bridge. We won more comfortably at Lord’s but we still had our backs against the wall a couple of times – we were 30 for 3 each innings. We still have improvements to make and we know how dangerous they can be. Maybe they might be even more dangerous now they have nothing to lose.”There can have been few better times to be a Lancastrian fast bowler. Anderson was able to mark his 31st birthday by netting with England in a transformed stadium – the latest English ground to be transformed in a golden period which has somehow survived the financial crash that arrived at a most inopportune time. The stands are red and so, for a while, will be the balance sheets, but Old Trafford is heading for the biggest crowds in its history as the north-west reaffirms its central role in English cricket. It is good that Lancashire has, in Anderson, such an impressive representative on the field, a fast bowler at his peak, as proud of his north-west upbringing as was Brian Statham half a century before him.He tells in his autobiography, , of being “the proud owner” of Lancashire’s first replica shirt at the age of 12. He sat alongside his father to watch Lancashire win the Benson and Hedges Cup final at Lord’s in 1995 and strolled around on the outfield afterwards, dreaming of playing at Lord’s in front of a capacity crowd. “As a Lancastrian – and this applies to Yorkshiremen, too,” he said, “the club badge is revered from a young age.”The third Test, incidentally, will not be entirely a display of Red Rose pride. In a quirk of fate, the first day happens to coincide with Yorkshire Day and there are reasons to believe that the lot over t’Pennines are planning a playful way to muscle in on the celebrations.”It’s always nice playing at a ground you’re comfortable with and have played at for years and years, knowing the people that work here,” he said. “It makes you more relaxed which is important, especially around a high-pressure Test match.”His birthday has further heightened his sense of the passage of time. “It does make you look back, wondering where the time has gone,” he said, “It’s quite strange saying state of the art and Old Trafford in the same sentence. It was getting a bit tired a few years ago and we were very lucky to get the money together to be able to redevelop it.”For many years, the only sign of council interest in the cricketing Old Trafford – there is a football ground of the same name up the road apparently – was a speed camera directly outside the main entrance, which caught out many an unsuspecting Lancashire member as they accelerated too enthusiastically through the gears after a good day at the cricket.Anderson, like most Lancashire players, crossed that road to join the crowds lobbying outside Trafford Town Hall when the future of the ground was in the balance. He did not press his way into the council meeting alongside Lanky The Giraffe, the club mascot, one of the more surreal moments in the long-running campaign. He is not a placard waver, or a singer of protest songs – he strikes you as a bit more of an undercover agent: more Spooks than Billy Bragg – but he turned out, did his bit and cared about the outcome.”We lobbied – it was good,” he said. “It was a slow process and it looked at one point as if there was a big spanner in the works. The guys here did fantastic work. The council offices are just across the road so we all went over and stood outside the front protesting. It was all about force in numbers. Having players there emphasised how important it was for us. It was looking like we weren’t going to get Test match cricket back here and the ground needed a coat of paint; it was looking tired.”No matter how many wickets Anderson takes in his career, no matter how long his spells, how never-ending his labours, it is a fair bet that he will never look as tired as Old Trafford did.

– Vou repetir a resposta do Sánchez: ‘jogamos no Santos.

'More pressure on the side' – Fleming

Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming was frank in admitting his side was under extra pressure with the controversy surrounding the IPL

ESPNcricinfo staff25-May-2013Just like the administrators, big India players stayed away from making any contact with the media. On the eve of the IPL final, both sides sent out their coaches, and Michael Hussey, to address the delegation, a task traditionally handled by the teams’ captains. Stephen Fleming, the Super Kings coach, was quite frank in admitting the side was under extra pressure with the controversy engulfing the IPL.This press conference was a day after Super Kings’ former team principal, Gurunath Meiyappan, was arrested by the Mumbai Police for investigations into alleged betting. Fleming started by reading a prepared statement, insisting the players were not aware of any wrongdoings, and were playing to the best of their ability.”The players and support staff are distressed by the allegations and news reports against the CSK franchise, the IPL and Indian cricket,” Fleming read out. “We have played every match to the best of our ability, and we are very proud of our record of having appeared in the playoff stage of all six seasons of the IPL.”The players and support staff have no knowledge of either the betting, or the separate spot-fixing allegations. As difficult as it is, all our focus is on appearing in the final tomorrow.”Fleming didn’t deny the existence of the crisis. “It is a great record so far but we are up against a very good side in Mumbai,” Fleming said. “We have had some great battles against them this year.”I guess one of the other issues is what was involved in the statement. That puts more pressure on the side, but we welcome that. Chennai are a side that has risen through a lot of challenges. We are very proud to have come this far. We are very much looking forward to a big final.”Hussey, the leading run-getter this IPL season, was asked what role he played as a senior player in this situation. “We are just trying to focus on the game,” he said. “There is a lot of stuff going on in the periphery, and there can be distractions, but from a player’s point of view it is important we focus on our game and come out and give our best performance. If we can do that, we give ourselves a good chance to win.”The boys will be very excited to get on the ground tomorrow and put all the controversies behind us. I think it is going to be a fantastic match. It is a fitting finale for a great tournament.”

Zimbabwe hold nerve for tense win

The first-ever Twenty20 at the Queens Sports Club ground in Bulawayo was a thriller with the home team squeezing home by six runs

Shakib Al Hasan was superb with bat and ball, but it wasn’t enough for Bangladesh•AFP

The first-ever Twenty20 at the Queens Sports Club ground in Bulawayo was a thriller with the home team squeezing home by six runs. Zimbabwe fought back mightily when it mattered and Bangladesh imploded just when they could smell the win. The visitors collapsed from 120 for 1 in the 15th over to being kept down to 162 for 8. Tinashe Panyangara bowled a terrific final over, giving away just three runs as the Bangladesh lower-order failed to play smartly.Zimbabwe had earlier made 168 for 5 after deciding to bat first. Hamilton Masakadza struck his seventh fifty while captain Brendan Taylor made a quickfire 40 as they put Zimbabwe on course for a big total. Bangladesh were brought back into the game by their spinners after the Taylor-Masakadza partnership ended, with Shakib Al Hasan getting both wickets and bowling economically in between.Shakib was doing the job with the bat too, hammering 65 off 40 balls and helping add 118 for the second wicket with Shamsur Rahman. He struck eight disdainful fours and two sixes while Shamsur ended up with his maiden fifty, after a slow start. The pair had taken Bangladesh to within 49 of the target with 34 balls to go, but the moment Shakib was dismissed, the Bangladesh batsmen started to make a meal of the chase.Shamsur fell two balls later and it was down to the Bangladesh captain, Mushfiqur Rahman, to steer the chase. He began badly though, involved in two mix-ups that ended in run-outs of Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah in the 16th over. Nasir was inches short of safety as Tinotenda Mutombodzi broke the stumps. Mahmudullah was far from the crease at the other end after he got mixed calls from Mushfiqur; Mutombodzi swooped on the ball to his left and scored a direct-hit.Then the pressure got to Ziaur Rahman, the Twenty20 specialist who had a torrid time connecting bat on ball. He frustrated Mushfiqur, with whom he almost had a collision, before falling to Panyangara’s clever length in the 18th over. This wicket, and the eight runs from the over, perhaps swayed Taylor into picking Panyangara to bowl the last over.Mushfiqur hit two sixes in the melee of wickets, before holing out to deep square-leg off the first ball of the final over when 10 runs were required. Panyangara was more resourceful in his last two overs than his first two, keeping it full to choke the runs. Sohag Gazi has some batting credentials but looked out of his depth towards the end of the chase while Abdur Razzak missed everything even though he was given room to swing.Panyangara took three wickets while Prosper Utseya broke the Shakib-Shamsur partnership, taking both wickets. Brian Vitori was also excellent, giving away just 24 from his four overs and picking up the wicket of Tamim Iqbal in the first over. This, after the Bangladesh spinners brought them back into the game with some control over the big-hitting in the last seven overs. Taylor and Masakadza put on 74 for the second wicket with the Zimbabwe captain severe on anything pitched on legstump. He made 40 off 25 balls with six fours and a paddle-swept six. He fell in the ninth over, after which Masakadza tried to up the run-rate but wasn’t too successful. He was dismissed after making 59 off 48 balls with four boundaries and a six. They failed to get the big hits away in the last five overs, with Shakib taking 2 for 20 and one wicket apiece for Gazi, Shafiul Islam and Mahmudullah.Bangladesh now have a final shot at redeeming the tour on Sunday. Mushfiqur will be under some pressure as he was in charge after the Shakib-Shamsur partnership broke, but couldn’t see the team through.

Nawaz Ahmed gives Peshawar convincing win

A round-up of the Faysal Bank One-Day Cup matches on March 7, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Mar-2013Group AMultan Tigers beat Quetta Bears by seven wickets in Hyderabad to secure top spot in Group A. After Quetta elected to bat, opener Bismillah Khan fell for a golden duck. Nasir Khan and Ali Asad, who top scored with 81, staged a recovery with a 63-run stand, but once both batsmen fell, Quetta struggled to 170 for 9. Multan’s Kashif Naved had the best figures with 3 for 19.Multan strung regular partnerships together, thanks to contributions from Zeeshan Ashraf (43), Sohaib Maqsood (48) and Saeed Anwar jnr (48 not out). Ultimately Anwar and Rameez Alam took the team home in the 30th over.An unbeaten, quickfire century from Mohammad Ayub led Sialkot Stallions to a 114-run victory over Lahore Eagles in Karachi. Sialkot elected to bat and started strongly, with the openers putting on 92. Fifties from Yasir Aziz and Mansoor Ajmad ensured the innings had momentum. Ayub’s 102 off 77 helped push Sialkot to an imposing total of 322 for 5 at the completion of their 50 overs.Lahore Eagles’ top four were unable to put up substantial contributions as the Sialkot bowlers made early inroads, with the team at one point 63 for 4. Adnan Akmal, with an unbeaten 85, was the only one who provided some resistance, as the team folded for 208 in the 46th over.Hyderabad Hawks chased down Karachi Dolphins’ total, to win by six wickets in Ghari Khuda Bakhsh, and climb up to the top of Group A. Karachi Dolphins elected to bat, but lost wickets at crucial intervals throughout their innings. Only Daniyal Ahsan offered some resistance with his unbeaten 66, as the team stuttered to 196 for 9. Rehan Riaz claimed the best figures of 3 for 33.Hyderabad, despite losing three early wickets, clinched the win through contributions from opener Azeem Ghumman (36), Rizwan Ahmed (52) and Faisal Athar, who finished unbeaten on 61.Group BAn attacking century from opener Nawaz Ahmed, backed up by seamer Imran Khan’s six-wicket haul, took Peshawar Panthers to a convincing six-wicket victory over Faisalabad Wolves in Islamabad. Nawaz hit 22 fours and three sixes in his career-best 167, to single-handedly steer his team past Faisalabad’s total of 276 in 43 overs.Faisalabad’s innings revolved around contributions from the middle order: Ali Waqas (52), Hasan Mahmood (54) and Zeeshan Butt (67), helped repair the innings after they were reduced to 16 for 2. The lower order, however, collapsed quickly, with Imran Khan taking a career-best 6 for 48.A fighting batting performance from Islamabad Leopards wasn’t enough to overhaul a daunting target of 319; they lost by 37 runs to Karachi Zebras, who secured the top spot in their group in Mirpur.Imad Wasim and Babar Azam, with half-centuries, and Fahad Iqbal and Zohaib Ahmed, with knocks of 44 and 31, tried to keep Islamabad in the hunt, but regular wickets and a mounting required run-rate forced an eventual defeat.Karachi Zebras’ strong total was built on a 175-run second-wicket stand between Khurram Manzoor, who scored 114, and Akbar-ur-Rehman, who scored 85. Their captain Faisal Iqbal also chipped in with a vital half-century, as they finished on 318 for 6.A collective effort from Lahore Lions helped them to a 73-run victory over Rawalpindi Rams in Rawalpindi. After choosing to bat, Lahore Lions built their innings with steady batting. Although no one scored a century, decent contributions from most of the top-order batsmen gave them a solid base. Fahad-ul-Haq, who top-scored with a run-a-ball 83, and Usman Salahuddin, who scored 56, played vital knocks.Chasing 278, Rawalpindi were reduced to 12 for 2 early on, and couldn’t recover sufficiently. Umar Amin and Umar Waheed, with an 88-run stand for the fourth wicket, gave them a chance, but the rest of the batting couldn’t contribute anything substantial. In the end, they were dismissed for 204 in 43.4 overs.
