A preview of Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2013

Kanishkaa Balachandran02-Apr-2013

Virat Kohli will face his first real examination at captaincy•AFP

Big PictureTwo-time finalists and yet, no cup. Royal Challengers Bangalore have choked at the wrong moments and it must be frustrating for their supporters that a team with the likes of Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers – possibly the best T20 batsmen around – haven’t gone all the way. The feeling of unfulfilled promise was evident in 2012, when the team finished a disappointing fifth. They ended level on 17 points with Chennai Super Kings, who finished fourth in the league, but missed the playoffs because of a marginally inferior net run-rate after losing their last match to eighth-placed Deccan Chargers. In all, they won eight and lost seven out of 16 games, and had one washout. The over-dependence on overseas stars and lukewarm showing by the Indian players were the main reasons for their failure to make the playoffs. Gayle was the tournament’s top scorer (733), hit the most sixes (59) and scored 31% of the team’s runs. Virat Kohli, with 364 runs, was second for Royal Challengers. Zaheer Khan and Vinay Kumar failed to contain the runs consistently and the team rarely found the right combination.A significant change ahead of this season is in the leadership. Kohli takes over as captain from Daniel Vettori and it will be an examination of his leadership skills, given he is touted to be India’s next captain. He has the backing of his coach Ray Jennings, who said he saw captaincy material in Kohli three years ago. With Vettori returning from injury – he has missed New Zealand’s recent commitments – it made sense for Royal Challengers to look for a new captain for the long haul. The bowling needed attention after last year’s showing. At the February auction, the team went with the strategy of beefing up their seam reserves, buying seven fast bowlers – four specialists and three allrounders – four of them overseas picks. Their batting hasn’t been tinkered with. Zaheer hasn’t been feeling a million bucks over the last few months, down with fitness issues and dropped for the home Tests against Australia. Royal Challengers will need him to get his form and confidence back to lead the seam attack.Key playersRoyal Challengers’ overseas players are available throughout the tournament. Much will depend on Gayle, de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan to provide electric starts. The expectations on Kohli will also increase.Big players inLeft-arm spinner Murali Kartik was bought outside the player auction and it could be a wise move by the team, given his experience. It’s his third IPL team, after Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors. He adds to the wealth of spin options, with Muttiah Muralitharan and Vettori in the mix.Big players outDirk Nannes was part of the squad last year but never got a game, due to the paucity of overseas slots. He is currently the second-highest wicket-taker in T20s, after Alfonso Thomas. He was bought by Chennai Super Kings for $600,000, where he is likely to get more opportunities.Under the radarIt’s ironic that RP Singh should be considered ‘under the radar’, considering that he’s currently third-highest wicket-taker in the IPL with 74 wickets. He was one of the several seamers bought in the auction ($400,000). He last played for India – out of the blue – in 2011 and hasn’t been in contention for a recall. His recent domestic form hasn’t been spectacular either, with five wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20. The coming IPL could spark a revival, if he is given the opportunities.AvailabilityDe Villiers is likely to miss at least the opening game, due to his wedding. Cheteshwar Pujara is also doubtful for the opening games because of a finger injury sustained during the Australia Tests. S Aravind, the left-arm seamer, is out injured and he has been replaced by his Karnataka team-mate KL Rahul, a right-hand batsman. When Royal Challengers travel to Chennai, the Sri Lankans Muralitharan and Dilshan will be forced to sit out. Vettori, if picked to tour England, could be available only through April.

O objetivo final, no entanto, é sempre o mesmo, independente do time: o gol.

Lumb and Hales lead England charge to series

It was probably fitting that England sealed victory against New Zealand with an enormous six over mid-wicket

It was probably fitting that England sealed victory against New Zealand with an enormous six over midwicket: they had dominated this game throughout and the margin of victory – 10-wickets with 44 deliveries to spare – does not mislead. This was slaughter. The result secured a 2-1 series victory for England.Michael Lumb and Alex Hales rushed them to victory with the team’s highest-ever opening stand in T20, but this was a result that also owed plenty to an excellent performance in the field. England bowled with pace and discipline and fielded with consistent skill to limit New Zealand to total that always looked inadequate on another good T20 surface. It was only the second time that England have won a T20 by 10 wickets; they also beat West Indies by 10-wickets at The Oval in 2011.Lumb and Hales will take the plaudits and probably rightly so. By the latter stages of their run chase they were treating the bowling with a disdain rarely seen at this level. With victory in sight, Hales thumped Mitchell McClenaghan for 22 in four deliveries – three sixes and a four – driving anything pitched-up over long-on and pulling anything short over midwicket. It must have seemed a long time for McClenaghan since he started his spell with a maiden. Lumb and Hales’ stand was the second highest for any wicket England have achieved in this format, following the partnership of 159 between Hales and Ravi Bopara against West Indies at Trent Bridge in 2012.In truth, New Zealand had not set a competitive total with the bat. Limited to 139 by an excellent performance in the field from England, they were never able to find any fluency and were always chasing the game.It was no surprise that England elected to bowl after winning the toss, despite Stuart Broad admitting he was wrong in the previous match. All four previous T20s at this ground had seen the side batting second winning the game and, with dew expected as the game wore on, it was anticipated that gripping the ball could become difficult for bowlers later in the match.Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain, admitted that he would have bowled first*, too, though ultimately the match was over before the dew became relevant. New Zealand’s bowlers were unable to replicate the tight control of line and length of their counterparts and offered too much width and too many over-pitched, short or wayward deliveries. That New Zealand were able to set any sort of total was largely due to Martin Guptill. The opener, while far from fluent for most of the innings, batted into the 19th over and contributed 59 runs to give his side some sort of target to defend. But he could not hit a boundary until the eighth over of the innings and did not manage another until the 18th as New Zealand struggled to get going against a purposeful performance from England’s bowlers.Broad and Steven Finn were particularly impressive. Both bowled with pace and found enough assistance in the pitch to allow them to stick to their natural length. Broad bounced back from his mauling in Hamilton with a frugal spell. He was thrashed for 53 in his four overs in the previous game, including 22 in his final over, but here conceded just 15. Each of his three wickets came with sharp, well-directed short deliveries which may bode well for a man seeking to prove his fitness ahead of an ODI and Test series. But England’s spinners also claimed the key wickets. Joe Root, called into the side in place of Samit Patel, provided another demonstration of the calm head that has seen him step-up to international cricket with apparent ease in his encounter with Ross Taylor. Taylor had just slog-swept Root for six over midwicket but the bowler, keeping his head, tossed the next ball up a little slower and little further outside off stump and drew the batsman into the shot once more. This time Taylor was unable to connect so cleanly and top-edged the ball to deep midwicket where Jonny Bairstow, as reliable a catcher as England have, held on safely.James Tredwell accounted for Brendon McCullum who had won the game for New Zealand in Hamilton with an innings of 74 in 38 balls, but might have been a victim of the larger boundary in Wellington. Certainly the slow-sweep he played would have travelled for six in Hamilton but here it again found its way to the sure hands of Bairstow at deep midwicket.James Franklin thrashed three boundaries, including two in a row off Jade Dernbach in the last over, to keep New Zealand’s head just above water but, with Finn and Broad conceding just 33 between them in their eight overs, England could feel very satisfied with the first half of their evening’s work.If New Zealand were to have any chance of defending such a modest total they had to take their chances. But Hales was dropped on 6 by Taylor – a desperately difficult chance – jumping at slip in an attempt to cling on to a top-edge off Ian Butler, and then again on 11 as Brendon McCullum, running round from behind the stumps to square leg, insisted on trying to claim a top-edge off McClenaghan that might have been best left to a closer fielder.Lumb should have been run out on 46, too, Nathan McCullum failing to remove the bails despite standing right by the stumps, but by then it was too late anyway. England were all but home. While Hales’ late assault was eye-catching, Lumb had looked assured throughout. It was Lumb who kick-started the England chase by hitting McClenaghan for successive sixes in the fourth over – the first a drive and the second, when the bowler pulled his length back, a pull – and his fluency allowed Hales the chance to find his form. A wild over from Butler, the fifth of the innings, cost New Zealand 23 – and helped Hales pick-up three leg-side boundaries and begin to settle. Neither he or Lumb looked back.11.15am GMT, February 15. This story was amended to correct Brendon McCullum’s remark

Ryder sets sights on England series

Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, has kept the door open for a return to international cricket for the series against England

Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, has kept the door open for a return to international cricket for the visit of England which begins with Twenty20 internationals in early February.Ryder, who was dropped after an incident during the one-day series against South Africa last year and has not played since, has a meeting with the coach Mike Hesson on January 29 after the squad return from the tour of South Africa.Ryder said he wanted to take himself out of consideration for the side for a period of time while he worked on various “issues” although he did play in the IPL. This domestic season he has been in impressive form for Wellington in all forms of the game; he has made 558 runs at 69.75 in five Plunket Shield matches, including three hundreds, and has amassed 508 runs in 10 innings during the HRV Cup at a strike rate of 167.65″There is a meeting on the 29th coming up when the coach is back so we’ll see how that goes,” Ryder told New Zealand radio station . “I’m definitely not ruled out for a return for England.”And Ryder, 28, confirmed he still has the desire to play in Test cricket as well as the shorter formats of the game. “Definitely all forms, especially Test cricket. That’s the main goal for me to be a consistent Test player.”Without going into specifics about what he has dealt with over the last 10 months, Ryder believes he will now be able to cope with whatever pressures the game throws at him.”I think I’ll be fine,” he said. “I’ve had a good 11 months off and worked on a lot of stuff…you’re always going to have your failures in cricket. Hopefully I can be a little bit more consistent once I get back to the international stage.”The return of an in-form, and focussed, Ryder would strengthen a brittle New Zealand middle order which was harshly exposed in the two-Test series against South Africa. Ryder has played 18 Tests for New Zealand after making his debut in 2008 and averages 40.93 with a top score of 201. His stop-start international career, hindered by injury and discipline problems, has also restricted him to 39 ODIs and 20 Twenty20s.Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain, was in no doubt that he wanted Ryder back in the side but that the comeback should not be rushed.”We would love to have Jesse in our team. He’s got some issues that he’s dealing with at the moment and he’s making progress. But when he’s fit and healthy and fine in his own space and performing as he is back home he’ll be a vital member of the team.”Ross Taylor, the former captain who also took time away from the team after his controversial sacking, is expected to return for the matches against England. New Zealand were also missing Tim Southee and Daniel Vettori from a first-choice Test side for the series in South Africa.

Australia call up Rohrer and Coulter-Nile

The fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile and the batsman Ben Rohrer are in line to make their international debuts after being named in Australia’s Twenty20 squad to take on West Indies next week. Australia’s selectors have named a 12-man squad for the one-off game on Wednesday at the Gabba and it is bereft of big names because Australia’s Test players will all be in Chennai by then, preparing for the first Test against India. That means the absence of David Warner (who is also recovering from a thumb injury), Matthew Wade, Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell and Xavier Doherty, all of whom were part of Australia’s squad for the two Twenty20s against Sri Lanka last month. Along with Coulter-Nile and Rohrer, the selectors have added Brad Haddin, Clint McKay and Josh Hazlewood to the squad from outside the group that took on Sri Lanka.Coulter-Nile, 25, collected 10 wickets at 27.60 for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League this summer and is viewed as a future Test and ODI prospect by John Inverarity’s selection panel. Rohrer, 31, was a remarkably consistent performer for the Melbourne Renegades this season, scoring 295 runs at 49.16 and a strike rate of 152.06, and in the longer forms he remains an important senior player for New South Wales. The other potential debutant is Hazlewood, 22, who has already represented Australia in ODI cricket but not in T20. He played only two games for the Sydney Sixers this season but is highly-rated by Inverarity’s panel and will be competing for a place alongside several other fast bowlers including McKay, who has played only four T20 internationals despite being Australia’s newly-crowned ODI Player of the Year. The Brisbane game will also mark the return of Haddin to T20 internationals for the first time in 18 months. Haddin, 35, announced his retirement from international T20 cricket in September 2011, declaring at the time that his intention was to focus on Tests and ODIs. However, Haddin has been overtaken by Matthew Wade as Australia’s preferred gloveman in all formats and the selectors are keen to keep him around the national setup wherever possible as he remains next in line behind Wade.”Ben Rohrer had an outstanding season with the Melbourne Renegades in the middle order and Nathan Coulter-Nile has shown very good form in all three formats throughout the summer,” Inverarity said. “Brad Haddin and Clint McKay are experienced campaigners and Josh Hazlewood is one of our very promising young pace bowlers who has recently regained full fitness. With the Test squad being in India this fixture will provide some more players with invaluable international experience.”Australia Twenty20 squad Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh, George Bailey (capt), Adam Voges, Ben Rohrer, Brad Haddin (wk), Ben Cutting, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Faulkner, Clint McKay, Ben Laughlin, Josh Hazlewood.
