A preview of Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2013

Kanishkaa Balachandran02-Apr-2013

Virat Kohli will face his first real examination at captaincy•AFP

Big PictureTwo-time finalists and yet, no cup. Royal Challengers Bangalore have choked at the wrong moments and it must be frustrating for their supporters that a team with the likes of Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers – possibly the best T20 batsmen around – haven’t gone all the way. The feeling of unfulfilled promise was evident in 2012, when the team finished a disappointing fifth. They ended level on 17 points with Chennai Super Kings, who finished fourth in the league, but missed the playoffs because of a marginally inferior net run-rate after losing their last match to eighth-placed Deccan Chargers. In all, they won eight and lost seven out of 16 games, and had one washout. The over-dependence on overseas stars and lukewarm showing by the Indian players were the main reasons for their failure to make the playoffs. Gayle was the tournament’s top scorer (733), hit the most sixes (59) and scored 31% of the team’s runs. Virat Kohli, with 364 runs, was second for Royal Challengers. Zaheer Khan and Vinay Kumar failed to contain the runs consistently and the team rarely found the right combination.A significant change ahead of this season is in the leadership. Kohli takes over as captain from Daniel Vettori and it will be an examination of his leadership skills, given he is touted to be India’s next captain. He has the backing of his coach Ray Jennings, who said he saw captaincy material in Kohli three years ago. With Vettori returning from injury – he has missed New Zealand’s recent commitments – it made sense for Royal Challengers to look for a new captain for the long haul. The bowling needed attention after last year’s showing. At the February auction, the team went with the strategy of beefing up their seam reserves, buying seven fast bowlers – four specialists and three allrounders – four of them overseas picks. Their batting hasn’t been tinkered with. Zaheer hasn’t been feeling a million bucks over the last few months, down with fitness issues and dropped for the home Tests against Australia. Royal Challengers will need him to get his form and confidence back to lead the seam attack.Key playersRoyal Challengers’ overseas players are available throughout the tournament. Much will depend on Gayle, de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan to provide electric starts. The expectations on Kohli will also increase.Big players inLeft-arm spinner Murali Kartik was bought outside the player auction and it could be a wise move by the team, given his experience. It’s his third IPL team, after Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors. He adds to the wealth of spin options, with Muttiah Muralitharan and Vettori in the mix.Big players outDirk Nannes was part of the squad last year but never got a game, due to the paucity of overseas slots. He is currently the second-highest wicket-taker in T20s, after Alfonso Thomas. He was bought by Chennai Super Kings for $600,000, where he is likely to get more opportunities.Under the radarIt’s ironic that RP Singh should be considered ‘under the radar’, considering that he’s currently third-highest wicket-taker in the IPL with 74 wickets. He was one of the several seamers bought in the auction ($400,000). He last played for India – out of the blue – in 2011 and hasn’t been in contention for a recall. His recent domestic form hasn’t been spectacular either, with five wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20. The coming IPL could spark a revival, if he is given the opportunities.AvailabilityDe Villiers is likely to miss at least the opening game, due to his wedding. Cheteshwar Pujara is also doubtful for the opening games because of a finger injury sustained during the Australia Tests. S Aravind, the left-arm seamer, is out injured and he has been replaced by his Karnataka team-mate KL Rahul, a right-hand batsman. When Royal Challengers travel to Chennai, the Sri Lankans Muralitharan and Dilshan will be forced to sit out. Vettori, if picked to tour England, could be available only through April.

Sornoza será o sexto reforço do Corinthians. Até agora, o Timão já anunciou o lateral-direito Michel Macedo, o volante Richard, o meia Ramiro e os atacantes Gustavo Silva e André Luis.

Playing his second match on comeback from injury, Sreesanth took 4 for 28 to bowl Jharkhand out for 120 in Mallapuram. Robert Fernandez and VA Jagadeesh then drove home the advantage by reaching 165 for 1 despite the loss of a wicket first ball. The day began with Sreesanth dismissing Akash Verma in the first over. He then took the big wickets of Ramiz Nemat and Ishank Jaggi in his fourth and sixth overs. When Sandeep Warrier took out Saurabh Tiwary, Jharkhand had been reduced to 62 for 5. Sp Gautam and Sunny Gupta added 28 for the sixth wicket, but the next five well within 30 runs.Jaskaran Singh gave Jharkhand a dream start with the ball, but that was the only success they would enjoy on a horror day.
ScorecardVikramjeet Malik took the only five-for in all 11 matches on day one, helping Himachal Pradesh bowl Jammu & Kashmir out for 175. This was his 14th five-wicket haul in 65 first-class games. It was allrounder Rishi Dhawan who provided the first breakthrough, getting Ian Dev Singh out for 2 in the sixth over. Malik ran through the rest of the top order, including the big wicket of Parvez Rassol. Obaid Haroon and Owais Shah added 47 for the fifth wicket, but Malik returned to remove Shah and make it 103 for 5. The sixth-wicket stand, between Haroon and Ram Dayal, added 53, but after that J7K just subsided. The Himachal openers saw through the rest of the day without incident.
ScorecardAsked to bat first in the early start in Guwahati, Andhra got off to a poor start before B Sumanth and veteran Amol Muzumdar lent their score some respectability. Arup Das rattled them with three wickets in the first spell, but from 26 for 3 Andhra did well to end the day at 214 for 8.Sumanth and Muzumdar added 80 fir the fourth wicket before another slide began. At 136 for 6, though, Muzumdar found a fighting partner in Rajesh Pawar, formerly of Baroda. They added 65 for the seventh wicket before Assam struck twice just before stumps. Muzumdar was 18 short of a century at stumps, with only two wickets standing. In Agartala, no play was possible between Tripura and Goa because of fog and bad light.

Steyn charges himself up for decider

Dale Steyn has said he did not do well in the first two Tests and is hungry to turn it around in the series-deciding Test in Perth

Firdose Moonda in Perth28-Nov-2012When Dale Steyn shows signs of irritability, the opposition should start worrying. The last time Steyn looked really angry, he returned from an ordinary day in the field to take two wickets in two overs and spark an England collapse that later proved to be series-defining.In Perth, he will turn up after “two Tests where I have not done too well,” and the bristle has begun. “Why would I want to come to Australia and be below average or average? You always want to come here and take five-fors,” Steyn said. “Just like as a batter you want to come here and score hundreds under immense pressure against one of the best teams in one of the most difficult places to tour in the world. Hopefully I can have a fantastic game in this one.”On average, Steyn has taken just under five wickets a Test in the 59 he has played. In Brisbane, he claimed only one of the five the South African attack managed in total. In Adelaide, he got closer with four scalps and thought he bowled a lot better. Although there was no swing, Steyn had better control and a touch more pace but he stopped short of spitting fire. The smouldering mood he was in at the SCG late on the last day of the tour match has yet to ignite, though. There, he sent down one of his fastest spells in Jacques Rudolph’s recent memory and it may take a real pressure-cooker of a situation before he explodes again.Something like Perth. Being the Test that will decide the series, Australia coach Mickey Arthur expects that Steyn will be readying for the big occasion and the man himself confirmed that. “There is a bit more want, a bit more need and that extra push. I know I will probably have a couple days off after this and I will do everything I can to get a result and to get the wickets South Africa need in this match.”But he won’t be able to do it alone. Steyn emphasised the rest of the attack will have to keep adding to the incremental progress they made from Brisbane to Adelaide so that they bring the full package to Perth. “It’s going to take everything out of everyone to win it,” he said.Although it is Steyn who has become Graeme Smith’s go-to man, in the same way Peter Siddle is Michael Clarke’s, he maintains he is not the only one with the tools to do the job. His reputation, according to him, was built only on been given the opportunity to dust off the tool box more than most and knowing how to use them well. “I don’t think I am the best bowler in the world and I am not the most skilful,” he said. “I am just fortunate enough to play every game for South Africa, I bowl a lot of overs for South Africa and I am able to take wickets when we need them.”Hopefully I can take wickets in this game. That’s what I am employed to do and that’s what I love doing. It comes down to one last game and it’s going to be a team contribution to winning this series. It’s not going to be just me standing up and taking seven or five wickets. Morne Morkel took eight in the last game. We will need a massive contribution from all of our bowlers.”One of the regular members of the attack who will not be able to contribute in any way is Jacques Kallis. While the physiotherapist is racing against the clock to get Kallis fit to bat, he has been ruled out from bowling in Perth and will leave a significant gap. “He is massive for us,” Steyn said. “Everyone can see he has been batting really well. But he can also hold up an end, he can take wickets, he is a valuable asset to this unit. An injury likes this puts a massive emphasis on what a great cricketer he really is and what a massive contribution he makes to the side. If he just misses one game, it’s massive but the day he retires, it’s going to be a whole different story.”Even without him, South Africa showed some glimpses of the attack that are known as the best in the world. “When we picked up the last five wickets in Adelaide for not many runs is pretty much how I know this attack can bowl and hopefully if we can string it together properly here in Perth, which is just around the corner for us, we could go home 1-nil.”With that in mind, Steyn extended his bullishness to the whole team. South Africa need only a draw to keep their Test mace but Steyn warned that they are still aiming for the Australian jugular. “We want to win the series. We didn’t come down to Australia to draw. We’ve played below what we are capable of but Australia have thrown everything they can at us and they still haven’t beaten us. If we can play to what our potential is, I think we will go home 1-nil.”

Ryder sets sights on England series

Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, has kept the door open for a return to international cricket for the series against England

Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, has kept the door open for a return to international cricket for the visit of England which begins with Twenty20 internationals in early February.Ryder, who was dropped after an incident during the one-day series against South Africa last year and has not played since, has a meeting with the coach Mike Hesson on January 29 after the squad return from the tour of South Africa.Ryder said he wanted to take himself out of consideration for the side for a period of time while he worked on various “issues” although he did play in the IPL. This domestic season he has been in impressive form for Wellington in all forms of the game; he has made 558 runs at 69.75 in five Plunket Shield matches, including three hundreds, and has amassed 508 runs in 10 innings during the HRV Cup at a strike rate of 167.65″There is a meeting on the 29th coming up when the coach is back so we’ll see how that goes,” Ryder told New Zealand radio station . “I’m definitely not ruled out for a return for England.”And Ryder, 28, confirmed he still has the desire to play in Test cricket as well as the shorter formats of the game. “Definitely all forms, especially Test cricket. That’s the main goal for me to be a consistent Test player.”Without going into specifics about what he has dealt with over the last 10 months, Ryder believes he will now be able to cope with whatever pressures the game throws at him.”I think I’ll be fine,” he said. “I’ve had a good 11 months off and worked on a lot of stuff…you’re always going to have your failures in cricket. Hopefully I can be a little bit more consistent once I get back to the international stage.”The return of an in-form, and focussed, Ryder would strengthen a brittle New Zealand middle order which was harshly exposed in the two-Test series against South Africa. Ryder has played 18 Tests for New Zealand after making his debut in 2008 and averages 40.93 with a top score of 201. His stop-start international career, hindered by injury and discipline problems, has also restricted him to 39 ODIs and 20 Twenty20s.Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain, was in no doubt that he wanted Ryder back in the side but that the comeback should not be rushed.”We would love to have Jesse in our team. He’s got some issues that he’s dealing with at the moment and he’s making progress. But when he’s fit and healthy and fine in his own space and performing as he is back home he’ll be a vital member of the team.”Ross Taylor, the former captain who also took time away from the team after his controversial sacking, is expected to return for the matches against England. New Zealand were also missing Tim Southee and Daniel Vettori from a first-choice Test side for the series in South Africa.
