Teve até sua liderança colocada em xeque pelos jogadores na Copa do Mundo. No Santos, terá a chance de provar se a Argentina foi a exceção de uma carreira promissora. A outra dúvida é se o Santos terá paciência para a adaptação, que deve demorar. Sem um grande elenco, Sampaoli precisará achar um esquema que agrade a torcida mesmo que a diretoria não eleve o nível do time – o que não é fácil após a saída de Gabigol e a iminente partida de Rodrygo para o Real Madrid. O Paulistão mostrará a distância entre expectativa e realidade.

A venda de Matheus Fernandes para o Palmeiras, que falta apenas ser oficializada, vai tirar do Botafogo um dos jogadores mais utilizados. Por outro lado, é uma operação necessária para aliviar as contas do clube. O diretor geral da base alvinegra, Manoel Renha, espera uma melhora na condição financeira do clube, mas sabe que isso não vai mudar da noite para o dia.

– Tenho falado há alguns anos. Temos que formar e vender para o mercado. Espero ver, em médio prazo, o Botafogo ser um clube comprador. Não é a nossa realidade. Temos que vender até para equacionar a situação financeira do clube – explicou, em entrevista à Rádio Brasil. E completou:

– O Matheus, quando eu cheguei (2015, para a função) ele já estava aqui, e se desenvolveu tecnicamente, tinha idade de sub-20 até esse ano. Oscilou, como todo menino, mas, nesse fim de Brasileiro, se destacou. Já vinha sendo monitorado pelo mercado até do exterior. Claro que, se tivesse condição, era melhor mantê-lo por um tempo maior – lamentou.

Um dos momentos mais aguardados pelo torcedor botafoguense é o da mudança para o novo centro de treinamentos, em Vargem Pequena. O Espaço Lonier foi adquirido no fim do ano passado, mas a mudança para a nova casa dos times profissionais e de base ainda deve demorar.

– Quando estiver funcionando, vão estar lá desde o sub-11 até o profissional, mas leva tempo. Os campos devem ficar prontos só no fim de março ou abril. E a base não pode mudar a qualquer momento, até porque tem escola. Mas sub-20 e profissional já poderiam utilizar desde que se tenha um mínimo de infraestrutura pronta. Eu diria que, de forma bem pé no chão e com “vento a favor”, em janeiro de 2020 a base toda estará lá – ampliou Renha.

Outro tema que ganhou força nos últimos tempos foi a possibilidade de os Irmãos Moreira Salles, donos de algumas das maiores fortunas do país, assumirem o departamento do futebol do Glorioso. Conforme o LANCE! vem mostrando nos últimos meses, o tema é complexo. E o dirigente prega calma aos torcedores.

– Isso é um projeto no qual as pessoas estão colocando um pouquinho a carroça na frente dos bois. Passa por um processo de virar S/A (sociedade anônima), da mesma forma como vários clubes europeus se fortaleceram. Tem clube na Inglaterra que o dono é chinês. Como empresa, passa ter um aporte financeiro maior. No modelo que existe hoje vamos ficar dando murro em ponta de faca. Então passa por virar clube-empresa e eles (Moreira Salles) investirem como presidentes. Se isso acontecer vai ser diferente porque são dois botafoguenses dispostos a fazer pelo amor ao clube. Se vão fazer, vai depender do estudo (contratado junto à Ernst & Young). Se os irmãos entenderem que é positivo. Ainda está bem embrionário. Tem saído muita coisa como se fosse liquido e certo, e não é – entende o dirigente. E finalizou:

– O caminho é longo. É uma decisão deles desde que o modelo agrade. Se eles concordarem, passa para o clube aprovar o modelo. Mas seria interessante e é um caminho muito positivo para o clube. Não é uma coisa rápida e tem muita questão politica e de entendimento dos associados de que é possível – afirmou.

O time sub-20 do Botafogo perdeu o técnico Felipe Lucena na última semana, quando ele rumou para ser auxiliar-técnico do time profissional do Goiás. Ainda não há nome definido para substituí-lo para a Copa São Paulo, que começa em janeiro.

George Dobell20-Aug-2012Andrew Strauss has no immediate intentions of marking his 100th Test by resigning from the captaincy after England’s 2-0 Test series defeat against South Africa, their heaviest defeat in a home Test series for 11 years.”Hope so,” was his brief response when he was asked at the presentation ceremony at Lord’s if he wanted to captain England as they try to reclaim the top Test ranking which they have held so shakily for the past year.But there was little disguising that England’s poor performances in their year as Test No 1, his own poor form and the stand-off with Kevin Pietersen, all hang more heavily upon him than he cares to indicate.Half-an-hour later, pressed whether his enthusiasm for captaincy of the Test side had been galvanised by a spirited run chase on the final day at Lord’s, he was more equivocal and declined to reaffirm his desire to remain in the role unconditionally.”It’s probably hard to answer that after the week that’s just gone by,” he said. “It’s been a tiring week. I’ve great faith in the team; I’ve great faith in the set-up. I’ve still got a lot of desire there. I’m keen to get away for a few days and have a bit of a break. Then we all need to sit down – myself and Andy Flower in particular – and try and map out the way forward. I’ve got great faith in the talent in the dressing room, and also the desire in the dressing room and we’re going to need that.”During England’s time as No 1, they have lost six of their 11 Tests this year, losing to Pakistan in the UAE and at home to a South Africa side who out-performed them in all facets of the game. The last time England lost a home Test series by more than one match was against Australia, who prevailed 3-1 in the 2001 Ashes.Strauss, who failed to make a half-century in the series, admitted that it had been a difficult year, one which he would remember: “Not with a great deal of fondness”.He said: “We have had some tough times and I think that is a good thing. Test cricket tests out your character and your resilience. When you are No. 1 people are trying to gun you down and we have come unstuck a few times. “We’ve lost a lot more than we would have wanted to. Maybe that tag of being No 1 hasn’t sat as comfortably as it should have done with us. We haven’t been in that situation before, and maybe we’ve learned from some important lessons on how we should approach it in the future. Our first priority is to get back in that situation.”Whether it was because of a change of mindset – from being the hunters to the ones that are hunted – I don’t know. Or maybe we came unstuck in the sub-continent and lost a bit of confidence along the way. I don’t know the exact answers right now. But those are the sort of questions we need to find answers to.”When you reach No. 1 you have to up your performance, you can’t rest on your laurels, you can’t afford any bad days, you have to be hungry, just as motivated. Although I can’t fault the effort the guys have put in, in certain areas we haven’t been quite on the ball.”It will be a shame to hand over that mace to South Africa but right at the moment they deserve to be No 1 and we will come back.”Strauss identified England’s poor catching and flimsy top-order batting as the primary reasons England lost the series. “The obvious thing to focus on is that our batting was below-par and we dropped catches,” he said.”In a three-Test series in particular, dropping those sort of catches against a good batting line-up can be the difference between winning and losing games. We’ve got to sit back and have a look at everything, really: how we’re training; everything we can control; can we do it better?”We were never favourites to win the game today, but I thought the spirit the guys showed and the never-say-die attitude they displayed was a great credit to all the players. This was how I expected the whole series to play out – very close games of cricket, small margins between the sides.”

BJ Watling, the New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman, has said that he is prepared to face a “barrage of spin” on their Caribbean tour. New Zealand left for their tour, which begins with two Twenty20s against West Indies in Florida, on Sunday.Watling, 26, said that he expected the Caribbean pitches to be similar to the ones that Australia played on during their series in April. “I’m preparing for a barrage of spin,” Watling told the Waikato Times. “From what we saw when Australia toured there, and what we’ve been hearing, they [the pitches] weren’t the greatest. They were low and slow, and with a lot of turn.”(West Indies) can perform on the day and have the potential to be very good. We’ll be well-prepared because we’re going to have to be right on our game. The two teams aren’t renowned for their consistency, so we’ll be looking to be the more consistent – we want to come out on top in key situations.”Watling, who made his Test debut in 2009, scored his first Test century against Zimbabwe in January this year. However, he missed the South Africa series due to a hip injury. He said that he was fit and looked to make up for lost time. “It was good for me to get out there and catch some balls, get my workloads up and just good to get outside. The injury felt really good – I tested it out a lot last week and it held up well. I’ve been doing my rehab and it’s got better and better. I will definitely get a decent workout, but I’m confident I’ll get through it.”In Brendon McCullum’s absence, Watling is expected to take the gloves in both the ODIs and T20s on the tour, but in the Tests he would compete with Kruger van Wyk. “I was obviously quite surprised to make the Twenty20 leg – I don’t think my domestic performances have been that great, but now I have the opportunity to prove myself.”Edited by Carlyle Laurie

Imran Tahir was reflecting on a sudden no-balling problem as he joined the rest of the South Africa squad on a relaxing day at the London Olympics.

Most of the South African squad are enjoying some down time at the London Olympics but Imran Tahir, the legspinner, would be advised to use the opportunity to work on his no-ball problem with South African women’s’ javelin finalist Sunette Viljoen. Like bowlers, javelin throwers are not allowed to step outside their throwing area, something Tahir has been doing with unusual regularity.He bowled nine no-balls in the Headingley Test match, eight of them in the first innings and four on the fourth morning, when South Africa were going after England’s last five wickets. To add to the eight no-balls he bowled at the Oval, Tahir has sent down almost three extra overs in the series and developed an area of concern that did not affect him previously.”That is the main issue for me at the moment, because I don’t want to carry on like this,” Tahir said with a distressed expression. “I have never been a bowler who bowls so many no-balls in a game. I just don’t know what happened. I need to go and check my action.”Despite the overstepping, Tahir has been among the wickets and has recorded his best results after two Tests in a series. He is South Africa’s joint second-highest wicket-taker, with seven scalps, the same number as Morne Morkel and three behind Dale Steyn, and wrapped up the England tail at Leeds with three wickets in 13 balls.Combine that with the overall numbers: Tahir also has a slightly better average than Morkel and a lower economy rate than Steyn and you may see a sign that he is learning to blend defensive tactics with aggressive ones.”I am trying to be as patient as I can,” Tahir said. “I have always been an attacking bowler but I am trying my best to learn every day.”Failing to rein in over-eager instincts is something Tahir has been criticised for, particularly when he used his variations indiscriminately. He has since become shrewder in deciding when to bowl his googly and he has seen the results. Many of England’s batsmen were unable to pick the delivery as Tahir disguised it cleverly.But he erred by mixing up threatening balls with a assortment of freebies – full tosses and long hops – that he admitted were a poor reflection on his own ability. “I didn’t bowl well the first day. It was hard for me in the first innings,” Tahir said. “I think two or three balls turned in the whole five days. The cracks are very hard, not like at The Oval.”Unhelpful surfaces have been the norm for Tahir, since he made his Test debut for South Africa against Australia in November last year. Although he has seasons of experience in England, on tracks that offer turn, wet weather has prevented them from behaving similarly this time around. Tahir is hopeful that the third Test, at Lord’s, will present him with the opportunity to come into this own.”It has always been a flat wicket at Lord’s and I think it will turn more than at Headingley,” Tahir said. London is forecast to remain dry for the rest of the weekend but rain is predicted for the first few days of next week, before it clears in time for the Test.
