Antonio Rudiger exclusive: Real Madrid defender opens up on his Chelsea roller-coaster, Thomas Tuchel's 'wow' tactics and Germany's Euro 2024 hopes

Antonio Rudiger sits down with GOAL to discuss his 'dream' move to the Bernabeu, the managers he's played under and much more

Antonio Rudiger has experienced a lot in his career – especially big name coaches. Whether Carlo Ancelotti, Thomas Tuchel or Antonio Conte, the Germany star has had the privilege of playing under some of the game's most impressive managers in recent years. In an exclusive interview with GOAL, Rudiger, who has helped Real Madrid to the top of La Liga this season, talks about the tacticians who have shaped his career, how football offered him a 'way out' as a child, almost joining Paris Saint-Germain from Chelsea and plenty more.

    Real and Ronaldo

    Rudiger:
To be honest, not really much. But what I always remember is the 2002 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen – that goal by Zinedine Zidane. That's always been in my head.

George Weah played a big role for me back then! Because he was the only African to win the Ballon d'Or. After that, around 2002, it was Ronaldo, "El Fénomeno". It's a shame, of course, that he beat Germany in that year's World Cup final. But Ronaldo was still an inspiration for me.

I thought it was outstanding at the time and I had it too…

Things improved in the sense that I had proper football boots from that point onwards, for example. In terms of money, things also got a bit better. But not everything changed back then. The sums that young professionals were paid were also different back then than they are today. But it was still tough for us as a family. My brother was still young back then, around 16/17 years old, and of course he couldn't immediately change things at home for the whole family. Only I was able to do that in the course of my career.

  • Childhood and a fresh start at Stuttgart

You are educated at home, and I was definitely educated well. But when you leave the door, it's just you and yourself out there. Sometimes it's difficult to say no to certain temptations and certain things in the place where you grew up. We don't need to fool anyone: We all need money. It's not the most important thing, but we need it. And at the time, we needed it a lot. You can easily go off the rails. Thank God for me: my way out was football.

The change was really tough. I also don't know whether this switch was made with my optimal development in mind. When I think about it today, it was of course perfect.

I left because I simply wanted to play in the Bundesliga in the short to medium term. I saw that more at Stuttgart than at Dortmund. BVB were champions at the time – it was difficult to get in as a very young player. There was simply a lot of talent, and not just Mario Götze. The 1991 squad, for example, included Daniel Ginzcek, Marco Stiepermann, Marc Hornschuh, Lasse Sobiech and so on. They were all good players, but none of them really made it. Only Götze managed to play in the Bundesliga for Dortmund. That's why I wanted to look for a different path and then chose Stuttgart.

Huub Stevens was a tough guy, but off the pitch he was a very good person. He was honest, he didn't lie, I liked that, I needed that. You learnt the hard way with him, especially that mentality.

It wasn't planned, it came out of the moment. We just cheered like that and that was that. Back then, things were taken out of context and we just made a monkey show out of it (laughs).

Tuchel, Conte and issues at Roma

I've definitely had a lot of good coaches. If I had to choose one now, it would be Thomas Tuchel. I got on particularly well with him. His honest manner simply suited me. Also, when I look at his tactical understanding: Wow!

I have to be honest and say that all Italians are very demanding. But Carlo (Ancelotti) is really very relaxed. Conte really needed a lot of discipline. Tactically, it was at a very high level – simply a really good coach. Luciano Spalletti is really great. When I see the work he did at Napoli: It's amazing.

There was definitely a lot of tension. The two of them had a history that I don't know. But in the end they both respected each other, Spalletti and Totti were simply two alpha animals.

    Highs and lows with Chelsea

To be honest, I still can't say exactly what happened back then. That's part of football. Maybe he had other ideas or saw other players better. But the good thing about football is that the answer is on the pitch and I think I gave the perfect one.

I really wanted to leave. I wanted to leave. I wanted to join Thomas Tuchel at Paris Saint-Germain, that was my wish. But it didn't happen and six months later Tuchel came from PSG to Chelsea. We then won the Champions League together. It was probably meant to be.

I probably just fitted in better with his idea of football and he also really liked me as a guy.

That I can take the lead and lead the way.

Perhaps. But nothing like that has ever happened in my career. I even played under Lampard again at the end of his tenure. Let me put it this way: if it doesn't fit at some point, then it doesn't fit anymore. But no footballer in this world loses on purpose.

Everton fans on Kean transfer update

Lots of Everton fans have been left to react to a transfer update on Moise Kean from Nicolo Schira.

As per a tweet from the sports journalist and transfer guru, Paris Saint Germain want to buy the Italy international on a permanent deal from the Goodison Park faithful, as Mauro Icardi could be leaving the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League finalists in the summer window.

Kean has settled into life at PSG very well ever since his loan spell from the Merseyside club, meaning Carlo Ancelotti’s team could be entitled to demand a rather large sum of money for them to sign him permanently.

This, coupled up with the fact that the 21-year-old did not adapt well to playing in English football, has meant that several Toffees supporters are happy with the idea of him leaving.

These Blues expressed their happiness to let Kean go on Twitter, with one EFC fan even going as far as to claim that the striker is ‘hopeless’:

“£40 odd million and he’s yours! Or £30 million and Areola, that wouldn’t be too bad!….”

Hutchinson let Sheffield Wednesday down vs Brentford

Sheffield Wednesday veteran Sam Hutchinson badly let Owls interim boss Neil Thompson and his side down on Wednesday night as they were well-beaten in the Championship.

Indeed, the south Yorkshire strugglers tasted a third successive league defeat, leaving them three points adrift of safety with only one game in hand – a worrying position to be in with only 15 games left to play.

According to the BBC, Wednesday had decent periods of possession early in the first half, failing to capitalise on the hosts’ slow start before they took the lead in the 23rd minute.

Brentford then hit two more goals in a nine-minute period late in the second half to seal all three points in the capital.

Thompson’s first change came in the 55th minute with the game still only 1-0 and that saw Adam Reach, who was deployed out of his usual position in a no.10 role behind the striker, replaced by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

And it led to many supporters taking fire at the long-serving Owls star as they believed he was underwhelming during his time on the pitch, as you can see in the replies to the club’s official Twitter account here.

However, their frustrations may have been pointed in the wrong direction – yes, Reach appears shot of confidence (another reason fans should hold fire) but he was only playing in the role for the fourth time this term, and for the first time in five outings, as per Transfermarkt.

WhoScored shows that his best performances come at left-back (7.31 average rating) or left wing-back (6.81) rather than through the middle, so that disastrous call is on Thompson rather than the player.

Instead, the brunt of the flak should be aimed towards one of the Owls’ veterans, one that should know and do so much better – Hutchinson.

As per SofaScore ratings, the 31-year-old powerhouse was graded as Wednesday’s worst midfielders (6.1) – in fact, only two other players received a worse rating across both teams.

Hutchinson is usually a commanding presence in the middle of the engine room, where he usually wins nearly six battles per game but against the promotion-chasing Bees, he was weak and ineffective, winning just one of six duels (16%).

He was also rather wasteful in and out of possession, managing to make only 77% of his 47 passing attempts, whilst also losing the ball 12 times, meaning he lost possession once every 4.5 touches.

Only two other starters had a worse night in terms of passing accuracy, and they could be forgiven as the pair are defenders, who aren’t supposed to be as good with the ball at their feet as say, a midfielder.

The 5 foot 11 calamity was also found wanting on plenty of occasions as he topped the charts for the number of times dribbled past (three) for the visiting Owls.

Again, this is abysmal and well below his usual average of being dribbled past only 0.3 times per outing since re-joining the Hillsborough-based outfit.

Overall, Hutchinson should be steering this struggling Wednesday outfit to safety and instead, he’s dropping inept performances like this when it truly counts.

The former Chelsea man let his manager down big time.

AND in other news, Thompson still without influential man, it’s bad news…

Revealed: China fury at Lionel Messi stems from organisers finding out '15 minutes before' kick-off that Inter Miami superstar wouldn't play against Hong Kong XI

Lionel Messi's decision not to feature in Inter Miami's friendly clash against a Hong Kong XI was reported to organisers "15 minutes before" kick-off.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Thousands of supporters flocked to see the World Cup-winning Argentine train with Miami ahead of a much-anticipated friendly clash, but fans across the Asian country were let down when Messi eventually pulled out due to a reported injury. Michel Lamuniere, chairman and chief executive of promoters Tatler Asia, has revealed that this decision was kept from organisers until the last minute.

    WHAT LAMUNIERE SAID

Speaking in an interview with , Lamuniere explained that he only found out Messi wouldn't be playing "15 minutes before the start" of the game. He added: “The rest of the first half was spent trying to find solutions for Messi to play, talking, and moving around the pitch. [The event] was perfectly organised except for the lack of visibility regarding Messi’s injury, of which we had no idea”.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The unprecedented pre-season schedule was seen as a way of widening Miami's appeal to key markets in the Middle East and Asia, capitalising on Messi's first tour with the Florida-based club. However, that soon turned into a PR disaster, with Saudi fans also disappointed that a 'Last Dance' against Cristiano Ronaldo could never go ahead. They were appeased by a second-half cameo from Messi but those in Hong Kong were afforded no such luxury, with the Argentine and his home country publicly denigrated as a result.

Arteta Willing To Splash £300m on Fantastic Trio this summer

With Arsenal looking to end the 2020/2021 season out of the top four, having been a mid-table side for a greater part of the campaign, manager Mikel Arteta has been told to spend money on new signings this summer to help place him in the right frame to challenge for the League title next season.

The North London side sits tenth in the Premier League table, as many as 30 points adrift runaway leaders Manchester City.

Spanish tactician Arteta has a huge task on his hands to fortify his team and make them become a competitive side again; with former club manager George Graham insisting cash must be splashed.

Graham in an interview told Arsenal owner, Stan Kroenke needed to help Arteta spend £300million on quality new players.

In his words: “Arsenal have outstanding young players, but they need help. Quality players around them to show them the way. They need to go out and buy two or three players, each costing £75million to £100million.”

Three necessary signings have however been identified ahead of the summer window. These trio, Mikel Arteta must sign in the summer if he’s handed a transfer few of £300million by the Arsenal owner.

The Gunners have truly lacked a creative midfielder this season, so bringing in a Creative midfielder in Jack Grealish makes a lot of sense, and BoyleSports might just be including this section for the fans to make their predictions ahead of a potential transfer.

Houssem Aouar was strongly linked with a transfer during the last summer window, but Arsenal instead signed defensive-minded player Thomas Partey from La Liga side Atletico Madrid for £45million.

The omission and subsequent departure of World Cup winner Mesut Ozil indeed left a massive hole for a creative player in the middle of the squad and one player who has been linked to the Emirates consistently has been Grealish, following another superb campaign with Aston Villa.

Grealish is undoubtedly Villa’s best player and he is highly likely to become a Three Lions regular under boss Gareth Southgate also.

Jack, who has scored six goals and created 10 assists so far this term, is valued at about £100million by his club and would be a fantastic acquisition for Mikel Arteta’s team.

The North Londoners will certainly be looking to reinforce their backline this coming summer window and head coach Mikel Arteta has penned down the full-back position for strengthening.

The future of Hector Bellerin has been up for discussion for a while, with Spanish giants FC Barcelona interested in landing the Spanish full-back.

Right-back Achraf Hakimi is a footballer who has been tipped to move to Emirates, following a great campaign with Inter Milan. The utility defender can play both right-backs, and left-back too. His addition would add competition for defender Kieran Tierney.

The Arsenal target has scored six goals and made four assists so far this term and is valued at about £97.6million.

With club number 9, Alexandre Lacazette tipped with a transfer away from the club and youngster Eddie Nketiah not yet trusted, club skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be the only first-team forward in the squad next season.

And given the manager’s penchant for moving Aubameyang out wide left, there is a need to bring in a new striker.

A summer move for a player like Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin would make a lot of sense, having impressed under Carlo Ancelotti this term, with 18 goals in 31 matches for Everton.

Vincent Janssen faces the most important few weeks of his Tottenham career

According to a recent report from The London Evening Standard, Vincent Janssen looks set to be dragged back in from the cold at Tottenham. The 24-year-old made the move to the Premier League outfit back in the summer of 2016 after impressing at Dutch side AZ, only to struggle to replicate that goal-scoring form in England to thus see him fall down Mauricio Pochettino’s pecking order.

Yet a recent report from The London Evening Standard suggests that Pochettino will add the striker to his Premier League squad for the rest of the season, which represents the most important few weeks of Janssen’s time at Tottenham, as getting it wrong would almost certainly spell the end of his stint in the capital.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, it has been nothing short of a disaster for the Dutchman ever since making the move from AZ two-and-a-half years ago, what with the striker since then appearing just 39 times in all competitions for Pochettino’s side, netting on only six occasions.

And with a loan spell at Fenerbahce last season, it’s pretty clear just how far down the pecking order Janssen was at Spurs, to the point that even Fernando Llorente, who hasn’t exactly pulled up any trees during his time in North London, was seemingly more prominent in Pochettino’s thinking.

And with no senior appearances for Tottenham this time round either, it looked for all the world that the 24-year-old would be on his way out of the club during January, only to remain and perhaps earn one final chance to salvage his career at the Premier League title chasers.

Ultimately, the recent injury to Harry Kane has left a gaping hole at the top end of the pitch which certainly needs filling, and while Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura have done that in recent times, the sheer volume of football the former has played, alongside the latter’s struggles in the role, suggests that Pochettino may well shake things up as February progresses.

And with Llorente himself not always convincing despite netting once and laying on two assists in his last two Premier League appearances, the door may well be open for Janssen to earn game time – game time he simply has to put to good use.

Clearly, there is a very talented striker in Janssen given the amount of goals he bagged at AZ, netting 31 times in 49 appearances in his one and only season at the Dutch outfit, and he surely won’t get a better opportunity to prove to Pochettino and indeed the Spurs fans that he can be a striker the club can call upon in the coming years.

And with Kane out for at least a few more weeks yet, but big games coming thick and fast for the North Londoners between now and the end of February, the next few weeks are without doubt Janssen’s most important of his Spurs stint to date.

Tottenham fans… what do you think? Let us know!

Norwich City interested in Joshua King

Daniel Farke’s Norwich City are interested in a summer move for Joshua King.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claimed that a recruitment source has revealed the Canaries are actively pursuing a deal for the Everton striker, who is set to become a free agent this summer.

The report claims that Farke is looking to add top-flight experience to his squad ahead of their upcoming Premier League campaign, with King emerging as a prime candidate.

Webber must move

While the 29-year-old did not exactly set the world alight after moving to Goodison Park in a deal in the region of £2m back in February, failing to score or register an assist for the Toffees over his 11 Premier League appearances for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, there is nevertheless an argument to be made that King would be a fine addition to the Norwich squad.

Although he did feature in 11 top-flight fixtures for Everton this season, none of these came as starts, with the £9m-rated forward averaging a mere 14 minutes on the pitch per game – significantly reducing the Norway international’s chances of having a real impact on proceedings.

However, in previous seasons, King has more than demonstrated that he is capable of finding the back of the net in the Premier League, with the £45,000-per-week striker scoring 48 goals and registering 15 assists over his 161 top-flight appearances while at Bournemouth.

Furthermore, with Farke considerably lacking in backup to and competition for Norwich’s 26-goal predator Teemu Pukki –  Jordan Hugill has managed just five goals over 34 appearances since joining the club last summer and injury-plagued 20-year-old Adam Idah still seems some way off being ready for regular first team football – a move for a centre-forward would appear to be something of a priority for the Canaries this summer.

As such, Stuart Webber should be doing all he can to convince King of a move to Carrow Road, as the 29-year-old – whom Eddie Howe previously dubbed as the “complete package” – would be a relatively cost-effective move for the sporting director to get over the line, as well as one who would bring a considerable amount of Premier League goalscoring experience to the Canaries.

Wolves fans slam managerial update

Many Wolves fans have been left to slam a managerial update as The Sun have reported that Jorge Mendes wants to get Nuno Espirito Santo to Tottenham.

As per the news outlet, Mendes, who is Nuno’s agent, has made contact with Spurs over a potential switch in the summer.

The super-agent is also believed to be working on bringing Bruno Lage to replace Nuno at the Midlands club should he move over to London.

While Lage is currently available having been out of the job since leaving Benfica last summer, several members of the Molineux faithful do not seem to be inspired about his potential appointment, and while they have endured a disappointing season so far, there is some confidence that Nuno can still turn it around in the next campaign given the return of Raul Jimenez and a good transfer window.
