Is it a real ‘transfer necessity’ for Manchester United?

You could be forgiven for thinking that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is a man with few problems on his plate as his side cruises to the league title this season, but the form, or rather lack thereof of his three wingers this term – Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young – will not have escaped his attention and few could blame him for looking at other options elsewhere in the summer, with one of the trio destined to depart Old Trafford.

With a 15-point lead at the top of the Premier League table as the campaign heads into the home straight, United have established a commanding lead over rivals City in what has quickly turned into a procession more than a title race of any sort. The club have won 26 of their 32 league fixtures and scored 73 goals all told, nine more than nearest rivals in that regard, Arsenal. They’ve failed to score in just two league games all season, again, a league best, yet the feeling persists that this is not a side operating at full capacity and there’s more juice to be squeezed from it.

Of course, Ferguson has already made his intentions clear by moving for Crystal Palace wide midfielder Wilfried Zaha in January, with the England international set to arrive before the start of next season, but you sense this won’t be the only major change in personnel when looking at the club’s attacking strength in depth. Even though £15m is a large sum to pay for a relatively inexperienced player like Zaha, it’s a sign that Ferguson is not completely happy with how his attack has shaped up this year.

It seems odd to complain too much when the side have achieved their ultimate objective this season, to win back the league title from City, particularly when they’ve made such a professional and in all honesty, an easy job of it, but the Scot’s greatest attribute is his will to win and his desire to keep evolving the side; he’s acutely aware that if you stand still, something which former rivals Arsenal and to an extent even City and Chelsea have been guilty of, you only risk going backwards in the long run.

[cat_link cat=”manchester-united” type=”list”]

When it comes to recruiting new blood, the terraces at Old Trafford have been crying out for a battling holding midfielder ever since Owen Hargreaves took up semi-retirement and they’ve never fully replaced Roy Keane. With every central midfielder capable of putting his foot in the tackle quickly hailed as the solution to the club’s evident problem the past five years, it certainly remains a top priority to supporters, but apparently not one that’s on Ferguson’s agenda.

Portuguese playmaker Nani is arguably the most divisive of the three, but whenever handed an extended run in the side in his favoured right-sided position, his record speaks for itself. Nevertheless, after featuring 29 league games last season, during which he made 10 assists and scored eight goals, he’s been reduced to just 10 outings from which he’s made two assists and scored just as many times.

The grumblings are that a contractual situation is the root cause of Nani falling out of the picture, certainly more so than any lack of faith on Ferguson’s part and it’s worth noting that when the side required a spark against top quality opposition, such as Real Madrid and Chelsea in the last month, he’s turned to the 26-year-old in his time of need, even if his marginalisation provides just a small insight into the manager’s ruthless nature.

Ecuador international Valencia is the biggest disappointment, though, with the 27-year-old setting up just four goals in 24 appearances in the Premier League so far as he grapples with his form in what has transpired to be his worst season at Old Trafford to date. This lack of end product, with not a solitary strike to his name, has seen swathes of supporters turn on the man who ignited their late title surge last season to the tune of 13 assists. Where there was once directness, now hesitancy has crept in and he’s starting to look very limited and one-dimensional when placed up against his peers.

This leaves just England winger Young to contend with, a player that has never fully convinced at United or really won over the vast majority of the crowd and while Nani’s temperament and consistency remains a divisive topic, the overall quality of Young’s play is not thought to be good enough for what’s required. His crossing has never been poorer and the way he often cuts in off the left flank onto his right foot each and every time is a simple move which many defenders have grown wise to, reducing his impact to just three assists and no goals in a stop-start campaign where he has featured just 19 times.

The summer arrivals of Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa have both added a new dimension to the club’s play, capable of the fluid, flowing moves that eluded them in the past, while they still stand a chance of beating last year’s tally of 89 league goals in their remaining six games. Moreover, the impact this has had on the side and their shape has directly contributed to United becoming less reliant on wing play than before. Danny Welbeck is often preferred in big games out wide now not only for his work-rate, but his tactical awareness, despite carrying little to no goal threat, as Ferguson’s side have tinkered with 4-4-1-1 and 4-3-3 systems all season. This has seen Rooney unsure as to his regular starting role, with van Persie the top man up front for the foreseeable future.

It could be that the team are slowly moving away from traditional areas of attacking play and to a more continental approach based around possession and quick interchanges in and around the box. With Zaha already on the way, and the future of all three wingers in the squad up for serious debate, for their lack of end product and goal threat in the final third, it would be no surprise at all if Ferguson were to move for another wide man, even though he appears to be looking for alternatives means of threat at the moment as he seeks to add more cutting edge and precision to a side reliant on the goals of their Dutch talisman.

Tottenham target’s happy to stay put

Tottenham’s hopes of signing Miralem Pjanic from Roma have been dashed after the playmaker insisted he wanted to remain in the Italian capital, according to talkSPORT.

Roma were concerned that Pjanic could be swayed by Spurs, however the 23-year-old has made his wishes clear.

“I don’t want to leave and the club know that. Perhaps there was interest in me, but my objective has always been very clear,” said the Bosnian.

“I want to stay here and I arrived at pre-season prepared to help the team and start the championship well.

“Saying that, you never know what can happen in the transfer market and I don’t know the financial situation of the club, but I want to stay and they are aware of my desire.”

Pjanic, also rumoured to be admired by Barcelona, has a contract running until 2015, but negotiations are already underway to secure an extension.

“A renewal will take time,” he added.

“We are talking about it, there is a desire there and we’ll just have to see what happens.”

Since signing from Lyon in 2011, Pjanic has made 60 appearances for Roma, scoring seven and creating another 17.

Bad boy Balotelli plays piano for Pirlo

Mario Balotelli just loves making the headlines – it seems as if he is prepared to do anything to get himself on the back pages, (sometimes the front pages too).

Let’s run through the list of Balotelli antics. From celebrating a goal at Old Trafford with the words ‘why always me?’ strewn across his shirt to nearly burning his house down with a set of fireworks. Then we have randomly entering press conferences when your manager is speaking to shake everyone’s hands to struggling to put on a training bib. Poor Mario.

But wait is Mario really poor? The Italian striker is widely regarded as one of the gems of world football despite his pastimes off the field. His talents have finally been realised after leaving father figure (and child-minder) Roberto Mancini at the Etihad Stadium to join up with AC Milan (this via a fight with Mancini close to the end of his career in training).

It seems Mario’s talents aren’t limited to the football field however. Here is the great man playing piano for the legend that is Andrea Pirlo. The song is no less than the Italian national anthem. The charismatic Balotelli clearly doesn’t take himself too seriously unlike many of his Italian teammates (Pirlo himself perhaps?).

Millwall ‘keeper reaches milestone but could he be off in January?

The last game before the international break, a 3-1 loss at the hands of Bolton, may not have had many positives to come out of it, but there was at least one –

This game was goalkeeper David Forde’s 250th appearance for the club, in modern day football, especially with players not coming through the club’s academy and in lower league football, how many players do you see reach 250 games for one club? Not many.

Especially the type of club Millwall is, if you’re half decent you will most likely be gone by the time the first offer comes in from a bigger club.

Fordey signed in 2008 after impressing on loan at Bournemouth (where he saved a Neil Harris penalty against Millwall). The Irishman became a hero only five games into the season when he saved a last minute penalty against Huddersfield to secure three points for the Lions.

He continued to grow and progress as the Lions found themselves in the play-offs that year,  and this is where we find Fordey’s finest moment in a Millwall shirt.

Imagine the scene: 1-0 up on aggregate against Leeds in the Play-Offs, half way through the second game at Elland Road and Leeds get a penalty. A capacity home crowd wait in anticipation for Jermaine Beckford to score yet another goal, not this time… Fordey saves. We may have lost at the hands of Scunthorpe in the final but he will always be remembered for that save.

The next season Forde was one of the main stars in the side as the Lions went one better and won at Wembley. Forde went from being left in the footballing wilderness to a Championship ‘keeper in two years.

It was all just about whether Forde could make the step up and in the first season he did. Yes he had his faults such as his distribution, and at times he’s like a hyper child coming out of goal, but he was good enough, as the Lions narrowly missed out on the play-offs.

The next season became a real struggle for the Galway born goalkeeper. He struggled badly, and a string of bad decisions and mistakes meant that he was dropped, and rightly so. He was replaced by the experienced Maik Taylor.

At this point he could’ve just cut his loses and moved on. But he stayed in the summer and fought for his place, plus despite his bad form he was Ireland’s number one at Euro 2012. So he could’ve had a number if clubs come in for him.

But he stayed, and with the help of new goalkeeping coach Kevin Pressman he soon became the first choice again, and without doubt one of the finest goalkeepers in the division.

Forde is now into the last few months of his contract, and he’s one of the only players I wouldn’t begrudge if he decided to move on, with his age and position he deserves one last chance of a bigger club and a big payday. Maybe somewhere like a Norwich or an Aston Villa, and now rumoured interest from Celtic too…

If I was him, I wouldn’t stay here, but for our sake lets hope he does…

Why for Tottenham it is likely to fall on deaf ears

Tottenham’s complaint, which they’re about to launch following Charlie Adam’s tackle on Paulinho on the weekend, is likely to fall on deaf ears.

The problem Spurs face in their pursuit for retrospective justice is that they’re not the first club to feel the lasting effects of players whose sole purpose is to take others out of action. Tottenham themselves may find action justifiable due to the nature of Paulinho’s injury, reportedly out for up to four weeks, but governing bodies such as the FA will ask why the exception should be made now.

That’s not to say Spurs shouldn’t seek to act. The issue, as is usually the case, is the governing bodies’ lack of interest in matters such as dangerous tackles, where a three-match ban is seen as sufficient punishment. Instead, the Premier League show more interest in stamping out what they believe to be damaging or insulting actions, such as Jack Wilshere’s salute to the Manchester City fans earlier in the month. On that occasion, there was no interest in the reckless tackle from Yaya Toure on Olivier Giroud – a potential leg-breaker.

The FA are far too concerned with the matter of undermining their own referees, refusing to take action retrospectively and upholding the authority held by their officials. You have to wonder where that tired and at times infuriating excuse is simply a smokescreen for their lack of willingness to come down hard on tackles which are perceived to be reckless and dangerous. After all, there is never further punishment handed out beyond a three-match suspension resulting from a red card – and that’s only if the offending player is caught by the referee during the game. It’s seems to be a case where governing bodies are happy to let such actions fly, rather focusing their time on matters of less importance.

It’s not to say it’s time now for the FA and Premier League to dish out greater punishments to offenders and repeat offenders of dangerous play – it’s to say that it should have been done a long time ago.

But where do you draw the line? What’s an accident and what is intentional? Problematically, every player who is found guilty of reckless play will plead their innocence and receive backing from their club, citing the age-old cliché that he’s “not that type of player.”

Moreover, from a public perspective, is there a definitive line we can draw where we can say with absolute certainty that a tackle is dangerous or not? Take Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher’s disagreement over Gareth Barry’s tackle on Mikel Arteta, which again could have resulted in a break. One condemned the tackle, while the former said Barry had a right to make the challenge. Nevertheless it was reckless. Shouldn’t players have a responsibility to ensure the safety of others on the pitch? Or does that strip the game of its masculinity?

England’s focus on the game is pace, power, strength and meaty challenges; it’s what the majority of the country have been brought up on. Therefore, it is increasingly difficult to differentiate between a tackle that should be outlawed and one that is well within reason. To some, every tackle has a place in the game, where if it doesn’t come off, it’s simply a matter of misfortunate rather than malice. It seems the FA are advocating this line of thinking too.

Tottenham are likely to be unsuccessful with their appeal, but that’s not to say they’re incorrect to pursue the matter. Paulinho has become Adam’s third victim in a Tottenham shirt in three years, of which Gareth Bale was the recipient of a reckless challenge on two occasions.

The FA, however, will simply bat away the protest for action, probably with one eye on the increase in appeals in the future if they do address Spurs’ complaint, but also because they just don’t appear too bothered by that side of the game.

Champions League the focus, says Liverpool boss

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has once again moved to dismiss talk of a Premier League title challenge by insisting that the club’s focus is on Champions League qualification.

The Reds put themselves firmly in the mix with a thumping 5-1 win against Arsenal, who had topped the table going into the sides’ Saturday clash.

With the result and the manner of the performance at Anfield, many pundits have been putting the Merseysiders alongside the Gunners, Manchester City and Chelsea as challengers for the league title.

But Rodgers – whose side are now three points clear of Tottenham in fifth and have a +33 goal difference – claims that the focus is on staying in the top four and bringing the highest level of European football back to the club and the city:

“I really only focus on the team and the football club, and make no mistake – I want to get into the Champions League for the people here at the club and the people of the city,” he told Sky Sports.

“I came here to try and inspire the city as much as the team. I know what Champions League football can bring to a city like Liverpool and everything it can generate.

“I keep the focus on improving the players, improving our performance levels, and you can see from the continuation of the development we’ve made over the last 18 months that we’re going to be a match.

“The momentum has been building and building, but I just think it would be unprecedented to go from being where we were last year in seventh position to first.

“We’ve got so many young players, who are still growing and developing and our squad is small. So I feel that we’ve still got work to do.

“But when we play like that and perform like that (on Saturday), people are obviously going to ask the question (can you win the league?).

“We’re five points behind Arsenal, four behind Manchester City and six behind Chelsea and we still have them to play here at Anfield.

“But the main objective is just to finish as high as we possibly can and let’s see where that takes us.”

Blackpool take Toffees forward on loan

Everton forward Apostolos Vellios will join Blackpool for the remainder of the season on loan, reports ESPN.

The Greek forward is out of contract in the summer, and this is a big hint that Roberto Martinez will not renew the forward’s contract at the end of the season. Vellios played just 54 minutes of Premier League football for the Toffees last season, and hasn’t appeared in a blue shirt this campaign.

Vellios took to Twitter to tell his 44,000 followers about the move:  “On loan to Blackpool for the rest of the season. I am really excited!”

The Greek forward cost Everton £250,000 in January 2011, but failed to make a real impression at Goodison Park. He has now joined caretaker manager Barry Ferguson at Championship club Blackpool, who are nine points above the relegation zone. But the Seasiders are hoping that Vellios could push the club away from the drop zone and closer to the top half, with 12th place currently just 8 points away with 8 matches remaining.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez hinted back in November that the forward would need to go out on loan to get first team action, but suggested Vellios was reluctant to leave Goodison Park. But now with just months left on his contract, the Greek striker has agreed to leave the club for the rest of the season on loan.

SIX World Cup Stars Liverpool should sign from Group F

Liverpool surpassed all expectations when they challenged for the Premier League title last season, coming just two points short of winning their first league trophy in 24 years.

However to overthrow the powerhouses from Manchester and London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea again, Brendan Rodgers cannot and will not rest on his laurels.

And what better way to scout talent than to enjoy the ‘Biggest show on Earth’, the FIFA World Cup.

Group F, in which Argentina battled it out with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran to progress into the next round (along with Algeria) is full of talent, but who is worthy of Liverpool’s attention?

Here we take a look at SIX World Cup Stars Liverpool should sign from Group F.

[ffc-gallery]CLICK ON EDIN DZEKO TO SEE THE FULL LIST!

[/ffc-gallery]

Javier Mascherano

Age: 30

Club: Barcelona

Position: CB, CDM, CM

Nationality: Argentina

Estimated Value: £14million

With Liverpool’s attack one of the best in the league, Brendan Rodgers will look to shore up the defensive aspect of the squad and could resign Argentine defensive-midfielder Javier Mascherano.

The 30-year-old already played for the Reds from 2007-2010, impressing enough to be purchased by Barcelona for £19million. Now deemed surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp, Liverpool should make an offer to bring back the former Liverpool man.

Edin Dzeko

Age: 28

Club: Manchester City

Position: FW

Nationality: Bosnia-Herzegovina

Estimated Value: £18million

Although Edin Dzeko has been a regular goal-scorer for Manchester City, the Bosnian isn’t as valued to the club as the other strikers. And with only one year remaining on his current contract, Liverpool would do well to sign the former Wolfsburg star.

Luis Suarez – especially with the new biting incident – is looking likely to leave the club and Dzeko would be an adequate replacement. In all competitions Dzeko scored 26 goals and provided 16 assists last season… numbers that prove he can score especially with the service he will be receiving from the Liverpool midfield.

Fernando Gago

Age: 28

Club: Boca Juniors

Position: CDM

Nationality: Argentina

Estimated Value: £4million

Another option for a defensive midfielder partner to play alongside Steven Gerrard is former Real Madrid star Fernando Gago. Touted once to become a great, Gago hasn’t developed to be an absolute world beater but is nonetheless a solid player in the middle of the park.

His impressive skillset includes tackling and composure on the ball, with a keen reading of the game to intercept attacking passes. The Argentine is a definite improvement to the injury-prone Lucas and could be snapped up for around £4million.

Miralem Pjanic

Age: 24

Club: AS Roma

Position: CM

Nationality: Bosnia-Herzegovina

Estimated Value: £18million

Miralem Pjanic has always been regarded as one for the future, but last season with Roma has seen the Bosnia-Herzegovina midfielder become one of the league’s best. Brendan Rodgers will know well that Steven Gerrard isn’t getting any younger, and Pjanic would be a perfect understudy.

The former Lyon man scored six goals and provided another six last season, but this one is just pure class.

Club: Lazio

Position: CM

Nationality: Nigeria

Estimated Value: £6million

Liverpool have been tracking young midfielder Ogenyu Onazi for some time and after a very successful season at Lazio, could now finally make a move for the highly-rated youngster.

Onazi is an adept player in the mould of Javier Mascherano, possessing an eye for the interception as well as getting in a crucial challenge. He is the perfect foil for a more attacking central midfielder and would work well with Steven Gerrard or his future understudy.

Ashkan Dejagah

Age: 27

Club: Fulham

Position: RM

Nationality: Iran

Estimated Value: £3million

Don’t let Dejagah’s choice to play for Asian side Iran fool you, the Fulham man has played for Germany in all Youth levels and impressed while doing so. The right winger is quick and good on the ball, but more importantly tracks back well, contributing to the team’s defence.

With Fulham relegated, Liverpool should swoop in to add some depth as they challenge in the Champions League next season. Dejagah played a pivotal role when he helped Wolfsburg win the Bundesliga back in 2008 (same team as Dzeko), and is by no means new to a challenge.

FIVE players Man United can turn to as Vidal turns down them down

Manchester United have finally been told that Arturo Vidal is not available to them this summer, after chasing the Chilean for much of the transfer window.

It’s another disappointment for the club, who have felt the sting of rejection multiple times over the past year. The protracted, fruitless chase of Vidal should be seen as nothing other than further embarrassment to the club, who failed to realise that the midfielder was not going to leave Juventus at this late stage of the window.

But even after the signing of Angel Di Maria earlier in the week, United are still desperately short of quality, both in central midfield and at centre-back.

With Vidal now firmly out of the picture, here’s a look at five alternatives for Man United to consider…

[ffc-gallery]Click on Blind to start the gallery

[/ffc-gallery]

Daley Blind

Daley Blind may have made his name as a full-back, but the Dutch international is just as good in central midfield, where he often played for Ajax last season.

It was widely expected that Blind would be part of the new arrivals at Old Trafford this summer, but a move has yet to take place.

The Dutch international, who is known well by Louis van Gaal, would be a great buy and the perfect complement to Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria in the midfield.

Sami Khedira

Real Madrid should be desperate to sell Sami Khedira in these final days of the transfer window, with the German international looking unlikely to extend his contract in the Spanish capital.

Manchester United have surprisingly not been linked with the midfielder, even though he’s exactly what they need. His all-action style would be an excellent fit in Louis van Gaal’s system, while his defensive work would allow Ander Herrera to thrive.

A former teammate of Angel Di Maria, Khedira would go a long way to helping United improve their fortunes on the pitch.

William Carvalho

Sporting are said to be willing to move on their initial price tag on William Carvalho, who has been attracting plenty of interest from English football.

The midfielder is one of Portugal’s most exciting talents and looks destined for a move to the Premier League in the near future. Considering United’s links with Portuguese football, it’s a surprise they have not made a serious offer for the Sporting midfielder.

There is a big price on Carvalho’s head, even with Sporting will to negotiate. But over time, he will prove to be the perfect addition to the midfield at Old Trafford.

Gokhan Inler

In recent years, the only major interest in Gokhan Inler to come out of England has been from Arsenal, who passed up the opportunity to sign the midfielder while he was at Udinese.

Now at Napoli and thriving, the Swiss international has been one of Europe’s most consistent holding midfielders over the past few seasons.

He’s the no-nonsense, tough-tackling leader United are lacking in the middle of the pitch, and would represent a very good alternative to Arturo Vidal.

Alex Song

They don’t get much more underwhelming than Alex Song, especially when names like Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba have been mentioned in the past.

It’s telling that so few clubs have registered any interest in the Barcelona midfielder. Evidently his ties to the Catalan club and his history at Arsenal have done nothing to convince potential suitors.

But what it all comes down to is that Song is a player who performs the defensive midfield role; how well he does that is another matter. He’s available and willing to move back to English football.

Try and look at it from this point of view: Song would be better than nothing.

Arsenal’s best chance for 3 points and four other things to expect this weekend

It’s back to business in the Premier League this weekend as England’s victory over arch rivals Scotland on Tuesday brought to an end the final international break of the year. We are approaching a crucial period in the season, as clubs begin to prepare for a demanding winter Premier League schedule which has so often curtailed encouraging starts and triggered alarming slumps in form. While there is plenty to look forward to in the latest round of fixtures, here are FIVE things that should be of particular interest:

[ffc-gallery]CLICK ON PELLEGRINI TO SEE THE FULL LIST!

[/ffc-gallery]

1. Arsenal’s best chance to break their United duck

Arsenal head into their crunch tie with Manchester United on Saturday evening having failed to beat the Red Devils in their last six meetings. Although the Gunners will regret not registering a win against David Moyes’s calamitous United side last season, they will be confident that they can stop the rot on the weekend, as Louis van Gaal’s already depleted squad suffered another costly casualty over the international break with the injury of Daley Blind. The Dutchman now joins fellow defenders Marcos Rojo, Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Rafael on the sidelines, leaving United with a dearth of defensive options ahead of the fixture in North London over the weekend. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger must feel that this is as good a time as ever to face United, and a victory would also give his side a psychological advantage over their rivals for Champions League qualification.

2. Crucial match for last year’s title-winning manager

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini is currently under the greatest amount of pressure that he has had to endure since he took over at Eastlands last season. His side are on the verge of a limp exit from the Champions League group stages, and their indifferent form in the league has left them eight points behind the indomitable league leaders Chelsea. The Chilean could have done with a relatively straightforward fixture this weekend to record a much-needed comfortable win, but in Swansea City, they face a side that are bound to cause problems. The South Wales outfit have made an excellent start under Garry Monk, and they go into the game full of confidence having beaten Arsenal a fortnight ago. Stoke City, Newcatle United and CSKA Moscow have all proven this season that the Etihad is not the fortress it was once considered to be, and if the Swans approach the match with a similar mentality, we could have a very tight game on our hands. Anything other than a win for Pellegrini will push him ever closer to the precipice.

3. …and for the runner-up

While Pellegrini might be having a tough time in Manchester, spare a thought for Brendan Rodgers. His Liverpool side have been quite frankly dreadful this season, and could sink as low as 13th by the time they take to the field against Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Reds suffered another huge setback this week with the news that Daniel Sturridge is set to face another six weeks out through injury, and they could even be without the misfiring Mario Balotelli for the trip to Selhurst Park as the Italian faces a fight to regain full fitness after a hamstring strain. This potentially leaves Rodgers with Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert – neither of whom have scored in the Premier League this season – as their only two recognised centre forwards for the match. Rodgers will be hoping against hope that they can open their accounts on the weekend, otherwise the calls will only increase for 41 year-old to be sacked – just six months after nearly guiding Liverpool to a first league title in 24 years.

4. Newcastle for Europe?

Alan Pardew was a pariah on Tyneside at the start of the season, with his Newcastle side’s terrible form since the start of the year sending the Toon Army into meltdown as the 53 year-old was made public enemy number one. Alan Pardew remains a pariah eleven games into the season, but at least his team is winning games. Indeed, the Magpies are on a superb five-game winning streak, and if they overcome QPR at St James’s Park on Saturday and other results go their way, they could even finish the weekend in the Champions League places. Although a club of Newcastle’s size should surely be aiming for Europe, years of underinvestment under Mike Ashley’s watch has meant that a mid-table finish is considered a success for the Magpies. In this regard, Alan Pardew is surely doing exactly what is expected of him, and while it is highly unlikely that Newcastle will end the season in the top four, a Europa League berth is a possibility if spirits in the camp remain high and the results continue to come. It will be interesting to see how long the anti-Pardew brigade holds out if the team they are supposed to be supporting keeps on giving them the victories that they crave.

Much was expected of Hull City and Tottenham Hotspur on the eve of the new Premier League season; the former had been the star of the show on transfer deadline day with a number of high-profile signings, while the latter were looking forward to life under Mauricio Pochettino after a forgettable 2013/14 campaign with first Andre Villas-Boas and then Tim Sherwood at the helm. The reality has been somewhat disheartening for both sides. The Tigers have struggled with consistency as the big-name signings of Hatem Ben Arfa, Gaston Ramirez and Tom Ince – now on loan at Nottingham Forest – have failed to deliver, while Spurs have found it difficult to adapt to Pochettino’s high-energy pressing style, losing five games already this season, four of which have come at home. The Sunday afternoon clash at the KC Stadium therefore represents a chance for one team to kick-start their stuttering campaign while also heaping further misery on their opponent.
