Major League Soccer suspended Luis Suarez three games for his role in an incident that followed the Leagues Cup final, in which the Seattle Sounders beat Inter Miami 3-0. He had previously been banned for six Leagues Cup matches.
The league issued a statement Monday specifying that the Miami forward will miss three matches: Sept. 13 at Charlotte FC, Sept. 16 vs. Seattle and Sept. 20 vs. D.C. United. MLS also announced that Sounders' coach Steven Lenhart's credentials have been revoked for the remainder of the 2025 season and playoffs.
Lenhart's access will be limited to public seating areas and he cannot be on or near field of play, or have access to tunnels or locker rooms, during that period. He will be allowed to reapply for next season. The Sounders were also disciplined for misappropriation of credentials.

Suarez already received a six-game ban for next year's Leagues Cup, with teammates Sergio Busquets and Tomas Aviles getting shorter suspensions, two and three games, respectively. Neither Busquets nor Aviles received any MLS-specific punishment. Lenhart got a five-game Leagues Cup ban.
Suarez instigated the brawl at the Leagues Cup final, and also spat at Sounders staffer.

After the brawl, Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano condemned the actions of his players involved, but also insinuated the actions were provoked.
"None of us likes to see this kind of behavior," Mascherano said. "When there’s a reaction, it usually means there was some provocation."

WHAT HAPPENED?
The 36-year-old, who signed for Dagenham and Redbridge in July on a three-year deal after leaving Bordeaux, came off the bench with his side 2-1 down but things only got worse after his introduction. The visitors comfortably won the second half as the ex-Liverpool man had a debut to forget on Saturday, with the game ending 5-2.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Former Newcastle United forward Carroll has played in the Premier League and has nine England caps, but it is clear he welcomes the opportunity to play in the sixth tier of English football. When he joined the club, he said, "It doesn't matter the level, as long as I get on the pitch and play football, that's all that matters." The ex-West Ham man will hope he can improve the Greater London team's fortunes going forward, though.
WHAT DAGENHAM'S MANAGER SAID
Manager Lee Bradbury, who handed Carroll some pre-season minutes earlier this summer, said of Carroll after the defeat, "Andy is going to be a big player for us with his experience and the way he leads the line. He is a handful, he has done it at the top level as a top pro, and he will only make us better and stronger."

WHAT NEXT?
The former Reading star, who has missed the start of the season due to a hamstring injury, could feature for his new team next Saturday in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup against Bedford Town. Beyond that, Carroll will be targeting firing Dagenham up the table as they currently sit a lowly 21st.
Australia’s hopes of having Michael Neser available if needed for the Adelaide or Brisbane Tests have evaporated because of the severity of his hamstring injury, but there is a glimmer of hope that Jhye Richardson could be considered as a back-up option later in the series if his carefully crafted return to first-class cricket remains on track.Neser, 34, suffered the injury on the opening day on the Australia A match against India A at the MCG and looks set to be sidelined until the start of Brisbane Heat’s BBL season on December 18. Neser was unlikely to be selected as Australia’s first-choice back-up seamer for the Perth Test even without the injury, with Scott Boland in line behind Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.Barring an injury in Perth, Australia are unlikely to need Boland for Adelaide given there is a nine-day break between the first and second Tests. But there is concern about the three-day turnaround between Adelaide and Brisbane, followed by a seven-day break to Boxing Day and then a three-day gap to Sydney. The quicks themselves and the team management have publicly stated that playing all five Tests without a change, as they did last year, is highly unlikely.Related

If two of the quicks were to go down, as they did in the 2021-22 Ashes and 2022-23 summer, then Australia would need another fast bowler beyond Boland. Neser’s unavailability brings the likes of Nathan McAndrew and Sean Abbott into the frame. But it is understood there is hope that Richardson, 28, could be fit enough to be considered as he continues his careful buildback from injury and other physical issues.Richardson took 1 for 19 from five overs at the MCG on Wednesday in his fourth List A game so far this summer to go with two second XI matches. He will not play in Western Australia’s upcoming Sheffield Shield game against Victoria at the Junction Oval starting on Friday. But speaking after WA’s One-Day Cup loss, Richardson said he was hopeful he could play in WA’s day-night Shield game against South Australia at Adelaide Oval, strting November 23, which could also be Lance Morris’ first Shield game of the summer.”Pending selection, hopefully next game,” Richardson said. “I’m still waiting to see what sort of restriction and stuff is put on that. It’s a pink ball in Adelaide, and, you know, I like playing pink-ball games, so I’ve been pushing hard to get into that one, but we’ll see how we go. Obviously, the plan’s not 100% finalised.”Richardson’s last Test match was a pink-ball game in Adelaide in 2021 when he took his maiden Test five-wicket haul against England. But he has endured a horror run with injuries since, including further shoulder and hamstring surgeries. On top of that, he has publicly acknowledged that a mental health battle has affected his physical conditioning. He is a different body shape to when he first started his first-class and international career and it has made him more susceptible to soft tissue injuries. He has been bowling without interruption since his return in IPL 2024 but as a Cricket Australia contracted player, a decision was made during the off-season that his build towards a first-class return would be gradual. There was a period as late as September where it was thought he may not play any red-ball cricket before the BBL.But since then he has strung together four List A games, taking 5 for 63, 3 for 36, 0 for 25 and 1 for 19 and two four-day second XI games for WA.”It’s been a little bit frustrating,” Richardson said. “But I was told that at the start of this whole process. I was told it was going to be slow and very purposeful. So we’re hopefully getting to the back end of it now, getting into some red ball [cricket]. Hopefully it’s all worth it.”The second XI returns were hugely encouraging. He was on heavy restrictions in the first game against South Australia in early October, bowling just ten overs in the first innings and six in the second. But his performance against New South Wales in early November has changed a lot of thinking around his progression. He took 4 for 13 from 11 overs in the first innings and backed it up with 1 for 30 from 14 in the second. It was the most overs he had bowled in a game in over 12 months.”To be honest, felt like I was alive again,” Richardson said. “The bones and the muscles were a little bit sore, but that’s a good thing. Means you’ve done something purposeful. Haven’t had that feeling for a long time. So very happy.Jhye Richardson’s first Test five-for sealed Australia’s win in the pink-ball Test against England in Adelaide back in 2021•AFP/Getty Images
“I think for the game, I bowled a spell of six, a spell of seven, and another two spells of six, or something like that. So they were relatively long spells, which is a good thing. I was able to sort of get into a bit of rhythm and feel what it’s like to bowl a long spell again.”I probably could have used another spell or two in there, but I’m very happy.”Richardson is still unable to throw from deep in the outfield due to the shoulder issue but he said it was manageable, while acknowledging fielding was an important part of contributing to the team.He was asked whether he thought he could handle playing back-to-back Shield games in late November and early December, before the BBL break. “I hope so,” he said. “I think I could.”Richardson confirmed he would go in the IPL auction but he did not have a target in mind in terms of his international return.”It’s [on] a game-by-game basis at this stage, especially with this process being a little bit slower,” he said. “It’s just looking forward to the game that I’ve got ahead of me. There’s so much talk about who’s going to be in and out with the Test squad and the changeover of personnel and stuff like that. But it’s not something that I can afford to think about too much. If I put too much pressure on myself, then it’s not good for anyone. So it’s just about playing these games, performing and getting through that’s the main thing for me.”

India have made every effort possible to restore to this series the one major ingredient it had lacked up to this point: home advantage

Manjrekar: Feel sorry for Rahul, but he will have to make way for Gill
Big pictureIndia have been here before. It hasn’t happened all that often in the recent past, but they’ve been 1-0 down in a home Test series. It happened against Australia in 2017, and then against England in 2021 and 2024. All three times, they came back to win the series. Both those series, however, were four Tests long. India’s current generation have never really been in the situation they are in now against New Zealand: 1-0 down at home, with only two Tests to go.It puts them under immense pressure. Beating India in India remains the toughest challenge in Test cricket today, but away teams over the last two years have been winning Tests here more frequently than they used to. It’s a sign, perhaps, of one era transitioning into another, a reminder of the cricketing mortality of R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. This doesn’t change the fact, however, that India remain overwhelming favourites when the second Test begins on Thursday. New Zealand won in Bengaluru, yes, but they won via the perfect storm brewed up by the weather and a deceptive pitch that led India to make what turned out to be the wrong toss and selection calls for those conditions. New Zealand were themselves poised to make the same toss call had Tom Latham called correctly. It isn’t often that a visiting side shows up for a Test match in India and finds conditions that suit them more than the home side. Before Bengaluru 2024, it had perhaps happened twice in this century: Nagpur 2004 and Ahmedabad 2008.Related

Pune will not be like Bengaluru. India have made every effort possible to restore to this series the one major ingredient it had lacked up to this point: home advantage. The specifics of how the Pune pitch will behave will only become clear when the match begins, but the broad outline is likely to be a lot less help for New Zealand’s quicks, and a lot more room for India to maximise the superior skill and control of their spin attack. It won’t guarantee the result they want, not against this superb New Zealand side, but whether they win, lose or draw, India will journey to their fate on something like their own terms.2:03
Could India go all out with four spinners in Pune?
Form guideIndia LWWWW (last five Tests, most recent first) New Zealand WLLLLIn the spotlight – Shubman Gill and Glenn PhillipsShubman Gill has found a new level as a Test batter since his move to No. 3 last year, averaging 43.23 across 11 matches and scoring three hundreds. He got through a regular workload in the nets in the lead-up to the second Test, suggesting he will return to India’s line-up after missing the Bengaluru Test with a stiff neck. With Gill back at No. 3, India’s batting order will wear a far more settled look, with the names below his back in their natural habitats.Since his return to New Zealand’s Test side in December 2023, Glenn Phillips has taken 23 wickets in nine Tests at an average of 26.47. Of all spinners with at least 15 wickets in this time, only Keshav Maharaj, Nathan Lyon and India’s big three have better averages. It’s quite a record for an offspinner who was until recently considered a part-timer. Phillips bowled 15 second-innings overs in Bengaluru and picked up the wicket of Virat Kohli. He may have to get through a bigger workload on a more helpful pitch in Pune, even if New Zealand bolster their spin attack, and could have quite an influence on the game if he can chip in with a big wicket or two. His ability to score quickly down the order could be handy too, handier still if it’s a low-scoring Test.1:08
Manjrekar: Rank turner will be an acid test for New Zealand
Team news – Sarfaraz vs Rahul, Southee vs O’Rourke?India have two major decisions to make with regards to their XI. With Gill set to return, they will have to leave out either KL Rahul, who has fairly good returns across a small sample size – a century and two fifties in six Tests – since his middle-order move late last year, and Sarfaraz Khan, who scored a rollicking second-innings hundred in Bengaluru. There’s also the question of the second seamer: should Akash Deep, who has looked like a natural in Indian conditions in his brief Test career so far, come in for Mohammed Siraj, whose 13 home Tests have brought him just the 19 wickets at 36.15? A dry pitch is expected to provide ample assistance to the spinners, so India will most likely stick to playing three of them. They have no major reason yet to look beyond the trio of Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, even if Washington Sundar and Axar Patel make compelling cases as allrounders.India: 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Rohit Sharma (capt), 3 Shubman Gill, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 KL Rahul/Sarfaraz Khan, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Mohammed Siraj/Akash Deep.Despite being 1-0 up, New Zealand may have the more difficult selection to make than India, because it may involve a change in the make-up of their Bengaluru attack. Conditions in Pune are set to be far less conducive to swing and seam bowling, which means New Zealand may have to think of leaving out one of their three quicks – potentially Tim Southee, their ex-captain, or Will O’Rourke, who took seven wickets in Bengaluru – and bring in an extra spinner. This could either be the left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner or the legspinner Ish Sodhi, who has come into the squad with Michael Bracewell released on paternity leave.New Zealand 1 Tom Latham (capt), 2 Devon Conway, 3 Will Young, 4 Rachin Ravindra, 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Tom Blundell (wk), 7 Glenn Phillips, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Tim Southee/Will O’Rourke, 10 Matt Henry, 11 Ajaz Patel.Pitch and conditionsAfter losing in entirely un-Indian conditions at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, India have gone to great lengths to prepare a track that theoretically minimises the damage New Zealand’s quicks can cause. A slow, low turner is in the offing, and spinners can expect increasing help as the Test match progresses with sunny weather expected on all five days in Pune.Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli share a light chat•AFP/Getty Images
Stats and trivia After losing just two home Tests in the ten years from 2013 to 2022, India have lost three in the next two years. KL Rahul is 19 runs away from the 3000 mark in Test cricket. Of all batters to have scored at least 3000 runs since his debut, only Mominul Haque and Kraigg Brathwaite have lower averages than Rahul’s current figure of 33.87. Before 2023, Matt Henry had 53 wickets in 17 Tests at an average of 40.24. Since the start of 2023, he has transformed his Test career, taking 50 wickets in just nine Tests at 21.26.Quotes”No, we are not even thinking of giving anyone game time. All we are concentrating on are these two Test matches [against New Zealand]. And these two Test matches are very, very important to us. How well prepared are West Ham United for the new Premier League season?
Well, Graham Potter will certainly take encouragement from his team’s performances during the Premier League Summer Series, beating both Everton and Bournemouth, their only defeat coming in the first game of their US tour against Manchester United.
The Hammers’ homecoming is on Saturday, welcoming LOSC Lille to the London Stadium, before the serious business begins at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland a week later.
However, supporters are certainly concerned about the make-up of this squad, given that Mohammed Kudus has been sold to fierce rivals Tottenham, with the arrivals of Callum Wilson, Kyle Walker-Peters and El Hadji Malick Diouf doing little to lift the mood.

West Ham's never-ending search for a striker
With Michail Antonio having been released, West Ham require a new starting centre-forward this season, even after the arrival of Wilson, who surely cannot be banked upon to remain fit, having seen just 458 minutes of action last season, scoring one goal.
Well, fair to say, they don’t have a great track record when it comes to signing strikers for big money, as the table below documents.

As the table outlines, since Antonio’s arrival in 2015, no West Ham striker has scored more than 25 goals for the club, with a vast amount of money wasted on players who produced very little.
Michail Antonio.
As they seek to change that, reports in Spain claim that West Ham are interested in signing Atlético Madrid striker Alexander Sørloth, with Brentford also mentioned as potential suitors.
They add that los Colchoneros would be open to offers for the Norwegian centre-forward, as they pursue Roma’s Artem Dovbyk, and that Sørloth could be available for as little as €25m (around £22m).

As the table outlines, Sørloth changes clubs very regularly, often enduring long periods without scoring very many goals, including making little impact during his time at Crystal Palace.
Up until recently, his career highlight came in the 2019/20 season, firing Trabzonspor to second in the Turkish Süper Lig and glory in the Türkiye Kupası, on target during the final victory over Alanyaspor at the Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadı, one of his 33 goals that season.
Sørloth has then found his feet again in Spain, scoring 26 goals for Villarreal, earning a £28m move to Atlético Madrid last summer, for whom he netted 24 times, on target every 78 minutes in La Liga.

Manager Diego Simeone described Sørloth’s form as “phenomenal”, while Domagoj Kostanjšak of Total Football Analysis notes that he ‘thrives on physical duels’, making him a classic target man centre-forward.
Meantime, Juan Fernández Valencia of Breaking the Lines agrees, praising his ‘exceptional ability to win aerial duels’, suggesting there were fears when he arrived at Atleti that he was simply a one-season wonder, but he very much alleviated those concerns in a Rojiblancos shirt.
Should Sørloth return to the Premier League, one player he’ll know very well is Håland, given that the duo have started all four of Norway’s World Cup qualifiers in 2025 up front together, firing their country to four wins out of four.
Manchester City's ErlingHaalandduring the warm up before the match
Håland has found the net during all four of these victories, with Sørloth netting in each of the first three, including a famous 3-0 demolition of Italy, their main rivals for top spot in Group I, in Oslo back in June.
As noted by Stuart James of The Athletic, national team manager Ståle Solbakken faces a real challenge getting both centre-forwards in the same line-up, given their physical and stylistic similarities; both are tall and physically imposing, but have excellent movement and thrive when able to burst in-behind.
That likeness has also been picked up on by FBref, who note that Håland is one of the most statistically similar strikers to Sørloth among those in their position across Europe’s top five leagues.
Interestingly, the Atleti star ranks in the top 1% for non-penalty goals per 90, thus actually placing him ahead of the prolific Manchester City talisman, who ranks in the top 6% in that regard.
Sørloth certainly would not face a similar issue should he move to West Ham, as he would instantaneously become the main man through the middle of the attack, so could the Norwegian be the player to break the Hammers’ striker curse?

Newcastle United’s star striker has already been the focus of a rejected bid, totalling an initial £110m, and the Reds are expected to return, for the 25-year-old has suffered a catastrophic failure in relations with those at St. James’ Park.
However, Liverpool are also in desperate need of signing a centre-half in the coming weeks, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate lacking cover at the rear.
Liverpool focused on signing defender
Following Palace’s victory at Wembley, their chairman, Steve Parish, admitted that they might have to cash in on Marc Guehi this summer, the centre-back having entered the final year of his contract and been on Liverpool’s radar for months.
However, Liverpool are also tracking 18-year-old Parma defender Giovanni Leoni, with deals on the cards for both defenders.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
It would be difficult to pull Leoni away from his Italian homeland at this fledgling stage of his career, and that’s why sporting director Richard Hughes has identified an alternative option to strengthen the backline.
According to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Liverpool are rivalling Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Aston Villa for Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez, having been in regular contact with intermediaries.
Marseille are also in the mix and hope to close a deal this month, so Liverpool will need to get the deal done quickly.
What Joel Ordonez would bring to Liverpool
Ordonez, 21, might be in the early stage of his career, but he’s already made 84 appearances for his Belgian side after making the first leap away from his Ecuadorian homeland.

Now ready for a big move to a top-five league, Liverpool could hit gold in bringing him over, intrigued by his blend of aggressiveness and proactive passing.
Looking at how Ordonez and Leoni rank up statistically over the past year, there’s a case to be made that the Club Brugge man is the superior player at this point in time, with a roundedness about him that suggests he could even be a fitting alternative to Guehi, should Liverpool’s pursuit of the Eagles star prove fruitless.

Leoni is a talented young player, but there’s little to suggest that he has what it takes to break free and become a smooth passer beyond the capacity of Ordonez, who has actually been described as having “an impressively complete profile for a centre-back of his age”, by scout Jacek Kulig.
The same, of course, is true for Leoni, but Ordonez has far more experience and thus more substance behind forking out a sizeable figure this summer.

Should either Van Dijk or Konate fall to injury this season, an understudy would be required to step up, and given that Ordonez has already fought against Aston Villa over two legs in the Champions League, he has the confidence and receipts to do exactly that: step up.
Though Guehi would be Liverpool’s first-choice pick this summer, there’s no certainty that Liverpool will manage to convince Palace to reduce their demands and secure the England international’s signature.
Crystal Palace's MarcGuehi
Should they fail to do so, this South American up-and-comer has the physical attributes and the smooth, forward-tuned ball game to make a real impact in Slot’s squad, certainly proving an upgrade on the young and untested Leoni.
