King dictates proceedings once again as Australia take control

England have little to show aside from Nat Sciver-Brunt’s fifty on day one of pink-ball Test

Not for the first time in this series, Alana King put on a masterclass of legspin bowling in front of the Shane Warne Stand to bamboozle England and hand Australia full control on the opening day of the pink-ball Test at the MCG.Just as she did across town at the Junction Oval during the ODI series, where a smaller, quainter Shane Warne Stand casts a shadow at the southern end, King put on a clinic bowling 23 overs unchanged from the start of the second session to claim career-best Test figures of 4 for 45 and help bowl England out for 170. Nat Sciver-Brunt’s 51 was the lone shining light for England on another bleak afternoon, but she should have been out twice to King whose spell even outshone the bizarre pop-up rock concert Australian artist G-Flip performed during the dinner break. The bowling performance was soured however by a hip injury to Ellyse Perry. She landed heavily after diving to knock back a ball on the rope during the middle session. She left the field shortly after and did not return for the last two hours of Australia’s bowling innings. Australia’s team management confirmed she would not bat on the first evening and would be reassessed in the morning.Annabel Sutherland instead walked in at No. 3 and saw Australia through to stumps alongside Phoebe Litchfield, cruising to 56 for 1 after the loss of Georgia Voll who opened on Test debut.Australia would have been delighted with the bowling performance after winning the toss and electing to field on an MCG surface featuring 9mm of grass. But they could have bowled England out even sooner.King should have had more, with four chances missed off her bowling alone as Australia were uncharacteristically sloppy in the field. Beth Mooney missed a stumping and a caught behind off King and dropped another off Annabel Sutherland diving to her right. Alyssa Healy failed to take a simple catch cleanly at slip, again off King, clutching at the ball awkwardly and grounding it while it was in the end of her fingers. King dropped a caught-and-bowled chance, while Voll grassed a straightforward chance at slip off Darcie Brown.None of the misses were costly though as England capitulated again. King’s hard-spun legbreaks were the stuff of dreams for a legspinner but will only create further nightmares for England’s batters after haunting them all tour.England were getting a foothold in the day at 97 for 3 when King deceived Sophia Dunkley with late drop to force a simple chipped return catch after Mooney had early missed a difficult stumping chance.King then went to work on Danni Wyatt-Hodge, fizzing three huge legbreaks past her outside edge in one over. Sciver-Brunt, who had held England’s innings together, was also beaten multiple times in similar fashion.King finally kissed Sciver-Brunt’s outside edge with another perfect legbreak only for a poorly set-up Healy at slip to grass the rare catch without gloves on. Her injured foot meant she was not keeping and posting up at slip to limit her running. But she was set up too high, with her hands on her knees, and was unable to pouch the ankle-high chance cleanly.Litchfield had no such problems at silly mid-off, taking at outstanding catch diving low to her right after Wyatt-Hodge presented the leading edge to another fizzing legbreak.England may have regretted leaving out Charlie Dean and selecting three seamers as their lone spinner Sophie Ecclestone chipped King to cover to hand her a third scalp.Sciver-Brunt was then bowled for the fifth consecutive innings in the series, and for the third time against legspin, trying to a pull a good-length legbreak that hit the stumps well under bail height.Amongst King’s carnage, Amy Jones was bowled playing back to spin for the second time in the series, missing a full delivery from Ash Gardner and losing her off stump.King missed out on a maiden Test five-for as Mooney dropped an edge off Ryana MacDonald-Gay and then clanged a sharp return catch offered by Lauren Filer. Brown claimed Filer instead before Lauren Bell was run out tamely to end the innings.Brown and Kim Garth had earlier laid the groundwork for King’s wizardry with an excellent opening burst that saw England slump to 47 for 3. Maia Bouchier’s miserable tour continued, nicking Garth behind for 2 to go with scores of 13, 0, 0, 17 and 9 in the white-ball series.Tammy Beaumont was trapped plumb lbw for 8 by an excellent delivery from Brown that nipped back off the seam to leave England 23 for 2.Skipper Heather Knight’s innings was anything but assured. She survived a similar lbw shout off Brown and a subsequent review that showed it was umpire’s call on clipping leg stump. She edged Sutherland behind but Mooney could not take the one-handed offer. Garth then followed Brown and nipped another back into Knight’s front pad and the appeal was rewarded with a raised finger.

Scorchers bank on Richardson, Allen and Connolly to finish 2024 on high

Perth Scorchers finished 2024 in second position on the BBL ladder after cruising to a seven-wicket win over the Adelaide Strikers on New Year’s Eve.A record-breaking ninth-wicket stand between tailenders Brendan Doggett (47*) and Cameron Boyce (29*) spared Strikers total humiliation in front of a bumper crowd of 41,624 at Adelaide Oval, lifting them to 142 for 8.But it wasn’t enough to stop resurgent Finn Allen (50 off 23 balls), golden-bat leader Cooper Connolly (48* off 35 balls) and captain Ashton Turner (35* off 18 balls) from piloting the Scorchers to victory with 33 deliveries to spare. The Scorchers reply, though, wasn’t without drama. Matt Hurst was dropped twice before being pouched for 3, and Scorchers should have been 13 for 3 when Connolly, on 4, edged Doggett to wicketkeeper Ollie Pope but only the bowler offered a muted appeal.Allen, who came into the match with 10 runs from four innings, was grassed on 11 by Alex Ross before earning the ire of fiery Strikers import Jamie Overton.

The pair exchanged words before clashing again when Overton ran Allen out backing up at the non-striker’s end, but didn’t follow through with the appeal, instead animatedly warning the New Zealander for backing up too far. After Doggett castled Allen, Turner came in and finished the job by crunching Boyce for 6, 6, 4.Earlier, Strikers crashed to 58 for 8 before Doggett – whose previous best T20 score was 10 not out – and Boyce became unlikely batting allies.Only D’Arcy Short and Ross – filling in as skipper for injured Matt Short, who suffered a fractured toe against Hobart Hurricanes last Friday – reached double figures for Strikers before Doggett and Boyce’s resurrection job.”Credit to them, they bowled well in the first 6 to 10 overs,” Strikers opener Short said. “It was nice for the boys to put on a bit of score for us to try to defend, but in the end it wasn’t enough.”Pope and Chris Lynn went cheaply before Jake Weatherald fell to a stunning one-handed catch by Andrew Tye, launching himself skyward at mid-off.Jhye Richardson, recalled to the Australian squad for the recently completed Boxing Day Test against India, bolstered his hopes for selection in the upcoming Sydney match. The paceman had Overton prodding a leading edge to Ashton Agar at backward point, then cleaned up Liam Scott with a superb yorker next ball.”It [win] was nice,” Richardson said. “We would have liked to have kept them to an even lower score. Coming into today, we know this is a high-scoring venue and [conceding] 140-odd, we would have taken every day.”Strikers, who lost 6 for 18 in 30 balls, were rescued by Doggett and Boyce who combined for an unbroken 84-run srand, the best-ever for the penultimate wicket.Pace trio Richardson, Jason Behrendorff and Lance Morris were the chief destroyers with the ball for the visitors, whose only concern came when Agar left the field with back spasms, although Scorchers don’t believe he will miss any games.”I would expect him to be back next game,” Richardson said. “It was a bit of an unfortunate spasm at the wrong time. I think he’ll be fine.”

Afghanistan sign up Younis Khan as mentor for Champions Trophy

The ACB said Younis will join the team in Pakistan for a conditioning camp ahead of the Champions Trophy, and stay on for the duration of the tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jan-2025Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan will return to the Afghanistan set-up as mentor for the Champions Trophy 2025. Younis had worked with Afghanistan in 2022, at a 15-day training camp in Abu Dhabi with an expanded squad of 25.The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said in a statement that Younis will join the team in Pakistan for a conditioning camp ahead of the Champions Trophy, which is set to begin on February 19 in Karachi, and stay with the team till the end of the tournament. This is the third global tournament in a row where the ACB has appointed a mentor for the team from the host country: they had Ajay Jadeja as mentor for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, and Dwayne Bravo as bowling consultant for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA. In the first of those, they finished sixth – with wins against England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and a near-upset of Australia – to seal automatic qualification for the Champions Trophy. In the T20 World Cup, they made it all the way to the semi-finals for their best-ever showing in a global tournament.ACB chief executive Naseeb Khan said of Younis’ appointment: “Since the Champions Trophy is being held in Pakistan, it was required to assign a talented and experienced player as mentor from the hosting country. We already had efficient experience with hosting countries’ mentors in ODI World Cup 2023 and T20I World Cup 2024.”Observing the conditions, therefore, we have appointed Younis Khan as mentor for our national team for the upcoming mega event and wish him best of the luck in his crucial assignment.”Afghanistan are in Group B at the Champions Trophy, with Australia, England and South Africa. The tournament is set to be primarily played in Pakistan, with only games involving India to be held in Dubai.Younis, who retired from international cricket in 2017 with the experience of 118 Tests, 265 ODIs and 25 T20Is to his name, took to coaching thereafter and was involved with the Pakistan senior men’s set-up as batting coach in 2021, albeit briefly due to differences with the PCB.

It's not Baleba: INEOS begin move to sign £100m Ugarte upgrade for Man Utd

Manchester United’s midfield remains a point of tension, even after a summer of heavy investment.

The club has already spent over £200m bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, yet the same concerns linger at the base of midfield.

Manuel Ugarte, signed for £50m from Paris Saint-Germain last year and once viewed as a long-term solution, has drawn consistent criticism from supporters.

His performance in the opening-day defeat to Arsenal was another example: combative, yes, but lacking composure.

Rúben Amorim, who knows Ugarte from their days together at Sporting Lisbon, has yet to coax the same dominant form out of him at Old Trafford.

Manchester United's ManuelUgartein action with Nottingham Forest's Taiwo Awoniyi

United fans argue that while Ugarte was brought in to shield the defence and free up the attack, the side requires a more athletic and intelligent option.

Particularly with Casemiro’s contract expiring next summer and Bruno Fernandes’ future subject to constant speculation from Saudi Arabia.

Man Utd enquire to sign Premier League star

After last season’s misery – a 15th-place league finish compounded by a Europa League final defeat to Spurs – Amorim is under pressure to get this rebuild right.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

United’s absence from European competition this season gives them a unique chance to reset, but only if the midfield is corrected.

That is why the club has now begun exploring not just a move for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba but also another of the Premier League’s most highly rated young players.

Brighton & Hove Albion's CarlosBaleba

According to United in Focus, Manchester United have enquired about Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

Journalist Graeme Bailey told the publication: “We can confirm United have made enquiries this week and are contemplating whether to make a move. Wharton is a player United have a long-term interest in, and like with Baleba, they feel he would offer them something different.”

This alternative pursuit follows the collapse of their interest in Baleba, whose valuation was deemed too high.

Wharton, however, will hardly be cheap. Palace are expected to demand in excess of £100m, particularly with Tottenham closing in on Eberechi Eze – a deal that would strengthen Palace’s hand in resisting further departures.

An upgrade on Ugarte

Wharton has quickly built a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most complete young midfielders.

Henry Winter hailed him as a “pressing machine” after Palace’s FA Cup semi-final win over Aston Villa last season, and his ability to blend relentless energy with intelligence on the ball has attracted suitors across Europe.

Real Madrid are among the clubs who continue to monitor him closely which marks a remarkable rise. Still only 21, Wharton was signed by Palace from Blackburn for just £18m in January 2024.

He made 27 appearances across all competitions last season, registering two league assists, though his progress was interrupted by a groin injury that kept him out for 17 matches. He was also part of England’s Euro 2024 squad, even if he didn’t make an appearance at the tournament.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner regards him as indispensable, particularly as the club plays in the Conference League this season.

Wharton himself has already shown he can rise to the occasion, standing out against Liverpool in the Community Shield when he set up Palace’s equaliser.

His blend of maturity, physicality, and incisive passing explains why United believe he could be the answer to their midfield conundrum.

The numbers tell their own story. Ugarte may have been named in the Copa América Team of the Tournament with Uruguay last summer, but his United form has yet to convince.

Too often he offers industry without incision – a contrast sharply illustrated when compared with Wharton’s output.

According to FBref, Wharton ranks in the 91st percentile for both key passes (1.78 per 90) and progressive passes (7.31 per 90), as well as the 93rd percentile for shot-creating actions (4.03 per 90).

He also completes 6.97 ball recoveries per 90 (96th percentile), underlining his ability to both win possession and instantly turn defence into attack.

Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta, Adam Wharton, EberechiEzeand Marc Guehi

Add in his 93rd-percentile rate for successful challenges against dribblers (3.00 per 90), and you have a midfielder capable of shielding the defence while also driving his team forward.

Ugarte, by contrast, has struggled with these progressive metrics.

Though combative and reliable in duels, his passing range is limited, and his decision-making under pressure remains a weakness in United’s build-up play.

Amorim’s system – one that requires midfielders to knit transitions at pace and resist the press – exposes those flaws.

It is precisely why Wharton feels like such a natural fit.

The financial aspect complicates things, however. Spending £100m on Wharton would represent another statement of intent from the INEOS ownership.

But with the club not in any form of European competition this season, United must tread carefully financially to avoid any PSR breach.

INEOS' Sir Jim Ratcliffe

They also must demonstrate to the fans that there is a pathway back to the top.

Signing one of England’s brightest midfielders – a player already drawing comparisons with the league’s most effective ball-progressors – would go a long way to proving that point.

Beyond numbers, Wharton offers something less tangible but equally vital: composure. Wharton has shown an ability to dictate tempo and control rhythm.

That balance between intensity and calm is something United have lacked since Michael Carrick’s days, and it’s no surprise Amorim views him as the kind of profile capable of transforming the side.

The move will be difficult. But if United truly want to replace Ugarte with a midfielder who can elevate both their defensive stability and attacking fluency, Wharton looks the obvious candidate.

For a fanbase desperate to see progress after a decade of malaise, he represents not just an upgrade, but a potential cornerstone for the club’s future.

Man Utd and Chelsea make history: Wild Premier League clash sets bizarre record after two red cards in sodden conditions

Manchester United and Chelsea played out one of the wildest and most exhilarating halves of football in Premier League history at the Old Trafford on Saturday, with both teams having a man sent off in the first 45 minutes. In the process, the English rivals became responsible for setting an unbelievably bizarre Premier League record.

  • First half ends in 10v10

Fans witnessed a blockbuster clash on Saturday evening as an under-fire Manchester United welcomed world champions Chelsea at the Old Trafford. The two rivals were always going to deliver an entertaining game, but it all became more interesting after Sanchez was given the marching orders in the fifth minute following a mistimed tackle on Bryan Mbeumo. Amorim's men took full advantage of having an extra man, as they breezed to a two-goal cushion thanks to Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, before the Brazilian received his second yellow and thus, a red card in the fifth minute of first half stoppage time.

United and Chelsea join hands for a bizarre record

Chelsea's response to going a man, and eventually a goal, down was to make three substitutions within the first 21 minutes, which also saw Cole Palmer come off due to an injury relapse. Enzo Maresca’s side made Premier League history by making the earliest three substitutions ever recorded in a match.

However, more records were set to be created, as the clash between United and Chelsea became the first game in Premier League history to record at least two goals, two red cards, and two substitutions in the first half, according to .

  • Old Trafford, Chelsea's kryptonite

Trevor Chalobah's late strike was not enough to save the Blues from their first league defeat of the season. Saturday's loss stretches Chelsea's streak without a win at the Old Trafford to 13 games, the most they have ever gone without a win on the road against any team in the top-flight.

    A lift-off for Amorim & Co.?

The win against Chelsea could be just the psychological lift-off Ruben Amorim's men need in their bid to reverse their fortunes. After just one win from their opening four games, beating one of the title contenders can prove to be a huge boost for the Red Devils.

Man Utd "very optimistic" they'll sign £22m colossus "in the next two days"

Manchester United are now “very optimistic” they’ll wrap up a deal for an “elite” Manchester City target within the next two days, a journalist has revealed.

Amorim has work to do before transfer deadline

There was a sense of cautious optimism after Man United’s opening game, despite losing 1-0 at home to Arsenal, but the 1-1 draw against Fulham at the weekend was a reality check, with Gary Neville stating he believes there is work to do before the deadline.

“I said this last week and it’s a little bit worrying: Fulham got a lot stronger when they made their substitutions, I actually thought United got worse when they made theirs,”

“Sesko, at the moment, let’s just say it, he’s nowhere near in terms of fitness or just getting up to speed. I love Mbeumo, I love Cunha, Bruno had a bad game today, but my biggest worry is the goalkeeper situation isn’t addressed and the striker situation isn’t addressed.”

Goalkeeper has been a problem position for quite some time, with Ruben Amorim alternating between Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana at times last season, and the former received widespread criticism for failing to deal with Declan Rice’s corner, which led to Arsenal’s goal.

Amorim defended the Turkish shot-stopper in the wake of the performance against the Gunners, but former scout Mick Brown believes the manager is “raging” because he “can’t rely on his current options” in goal.

As such, Man United have recently stepped up their pursuit of a new goalkeeper, with Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens, who is thought to be valued at £22m by the Belgian club, emerging as a major target.

He'd revive Fernandes: Man Utd chasing the "best English CM since Scholes"

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 27, 2025

There has now been a promising update on United’s pursuit of Lammens, with journalist Christopher Michel revealing they are now “very optimistic” about finalising a deal “in the next two days”.

The Royal Antwerp goalkeeper has also been targeted by Man City, but it appears as though the Red Devils are set to win the race, with Pep Guardiola’s side focusing on Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

"Elite" Lammens could be solution to Man Utd's problems

It would be a risk to bring the Belgian shot-stopper in as the new number one straight from the off, given that he is just 23-years-old and unproven in a major league, but there are indications he could be an upgrade on Onana and Bayindir.

Amorim simply cannot persist with Bayindir, who has already made one high-profile error this season, while Nemanja Matic infamously dubbed Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers” in Manchester United’s history last season.

Lammens, on the other hand, is very highly regarded by scout Ben Mattinson, who lauded him for his “elite shot-stopping”, while also praising the 6-foot-4 colossus for his “composure” in possession.

The Antwerp star is still relatively inexperienced, having made 64 appearances for his current club at senior level, but with Donnarumma seemingly heading to Man City, there aren’t a great deal of options for Man United, who desperately need a new goalkeeper before the deadline.

Levy in talks today as £68m star tells his club to let him join Tottenham

A “relentless” star has now informed his club that he wants to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, reporter David Ornstein has revealed.

Tottenham keen to strengthen attack despite emphatic victory

Tottenham got off to the perfect start to the new Premier League campaign, securing a 3-0 victory over Burnley, courtesy of a brace from Richarlison, before Brennan Johnson sealed all three points with a little over 25 minutes to play.

Thomas Frank will be happy with his side’s attacking display, not least because new signing Mohammed Kudus was also very impressive throughout the match, with the former West Ham United man picking up two assists.

That said, Spurs were always expected to beat a newly-promoted side, and they remain a little light on options in attacking areas, given that Son Heung-min’s 10-year stint in north London came to an end earlier this summer, while James Maddison is set for a lengthy absence.

Consequently, Frank is still eager to get a winger and attacking midfielder through the door, with Manchester City’s Savinho among the main targets out wide, while Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze could be a direct replacement for Maddison through the middle.

Speaking prior to Manchester United vs Arsenal yesterday, Ornstein has now dropped a new update on Tottenham’s pursuit of Eze, in which he suggests Frank’s side are in ongoing talks to hash out a deal.

Crystal Palace's EberechiEzereacts

The reporter said: “He quite possibly is still going to Tottenham, but he’s continuing to play for Palace in the meantime, which we saw with the Community Shield as well. Tottenham are pushing for his signing, but there’s no agreement yet. Eberechi Eze has told Crystal Palace that he would like to make the move there, and Palace are understanding of this.

“At 27-years-old, his contract expires in 2027. There was a release clause, it’s now expired, it was valued at £60m + £8m (£68m). I think Palace would accept a bit less but they want the right deal for them, and it’s not there yet.”

Fabrizio Romano has since added a new update, reaffirming Ornstein’s claims of Eze wanting to join but adding Daniel Levy is talking to Palace chairman Steve Parish “today” (Monday).

"Relentless" Eze could flourish at N17

The Crystal Palace star has been extremely impressive in the Premier League over a sustained period, picking up 16 goal contributions in the competition last season, and the Englishman thought he had gotten off to the perfect start to the new campaign.

Frank approves Tottenham move for "world-class" £60m Savinho alternative

Indeed, the 27-year-old scored a free-kick to fire the Eagles into the lead against Chelsea on Sunday, before the goal was controversially ruled out, due to an alleged infringement by Marc Guehi.

Former Palace man Joel Ward has claimed his ex-teammate’s “methodical” and “relentless” approach is the reason he has been able to establish himself at the top level, and the attacking midfielder is now ready to test himself at one of England’s biggest clubs.

As such, it is good news that Tottenham are in ongoing discussions over a deal, and it is even more promising that Eze has informed Palace of his desire to join Frank’s side.

Cesc Fabregas has 'deep knowledge and uncommon curiosity' as Pepe Reina hails ex-Chelsea & Arsenal star's potential after working under Como boss last season

Cesc Fabregas has been described as "very professional and passionate" by his former Como head coach and ex-Spanish national team-mate Pepe Reina. The former Liverpool custodian spent the 2024-25 season at Como, under the orders of Fabregas. The 38-year-old has become one of the best young managers in the world, helping then newly-promoted Como finish 10th in the Serie A table last season.

Fabregas among the most sought-after young brains

It took only one season of top-flight management for Fabregas to earn a reputation as one of the most exciting young coaches in the world. After Como earned promotion to Serie A for the first time since 2003, the club took a big gamble by appointing Fabregas as the head coach. And he dispelled all doubts by helping Como earn a more than respectable 10th-placed finish in the league. RB Leipzig were rumoured to be interested in the Spaniard, and so were Inter. Meanwhile, the English media have already started to link him as the successor to Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportA coach who loves to develop youngsters

One of the most striking aspects of Fabregas' management style is his keen interest in promoting and developing young talent. Last season, he pushed the club to sign Nico Paz from Real Madrid, with the Argentine becoming one of Serie A's best players in the 2024-25 season. Another player who has really taken off under the 38-year-old is Jacobo Ramon, another La Fabrica graduate.

Reina full of praise for Fabregas

Speaking on Radio Bruno's program, Reina said: "He's a well-rounded coach, with a deep knowledge of football and an uncommon curiosity. He watches countless matches to constantly seek out new insights. He's very professional and passionate, and his staff is highly qualified."
