Biggest waste since Werner: Spurs must regret signing £150k-per-week flop

Many years later, English football will look back fondly at Ange Postecoglou. The Australian tactician ended Tottenham Hotspur’s agonising search for silverware, after all.

But Postecoglou’s tenure was anything but smooth sailing, and though Thomas Frank’s style of play has withdrawn some of the electric attacking play that ‘Ange-ball’ injected in north London, with the 7.4 xG (expected goals) total thus far showing plenty to be desired on that front.

Still, it’s hard to argue that the moves made in the transfer market weren’t positive. Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United for £55m is a fantastic piece of business, and he is proving his worth on the pitch.

Xavi Simons is probably the summer showpiece, even if he hasn’t quite clicked into gear yet. The Dutch playmaker is capable both centrally and out wide, with his right-footed preference lending itself to a place on the left flank when needed.

That left-hand side is an area Frank will hope to work on, having sold legendary skipper Heung-min Son to LAFC for £20m in August.

In spite of this, Spurs didn’t see fit to purchase Timo Werner on a permanent basis, with the German’s two-year loan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ending rather meekly.

Timo Werner's time at Spurs

Tottenham signed former Chelsea striker Werner on loan from RB Leipzig in January 2024, with Postecoglou in need of an extra dimension in attack. It was a divisive move, but one which proved shrewd enough, Werner scoring twice and laying on four assists across ten Premier League starts in 2023/24.

Tottenham forward Timo Werner.

Fleet-footed and slippery down the left channel, Werner did his job, creating 1.2 chances per game and earning praise from Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson for his “lightning-quick” pace.

The first phase of this Tottenham duology was a decent enough effort, but as with so many unnecessary sequels, Werner’s second season down N17 saw him flatter to deceive, anonymous throughout the second phase of the season after offering very little initially.

Timo Werner in action for Tottenham

Savvy operators, Spurs initially had an option to buy Werner for £15m at the end of the 2023/24 season, but instead engineered an extension of that loan stay. Under the new agreement, an £8.5m purchase option was inserted.

Was this a good move? In hindsight, Tottenham fans would say that it was not. Last December, the 29-year-old was hauled off at half-time against Rangers in the Europa League, and Ange said post-match that the forward’s performance “wasn’t acceptable”, with his body language and application leaving much to be desired.

Wrapping up his time in north London with a return of three goals and seven assists across 41 matches in all competitions, it’s hard to brand Werner as anything other than a failure, having contributed little during the early stage of the European campaign, when he did actually earn some minutes.

Even with three assists from only four Premier League starts in 2024/25 (18 league appearances all told), Werner’s underlying performances did little to suggest he was up to scratch, with Sofascore recording he won just 1.2 ground duels per game, missing two big chances and taking a paucity of shots.

There are fears, even with all the good that is being done under Frank’s guidance this season, that Tottenham have repeated an unwanted trick and signed their next version of the German flop.

Spurs' new version of Werner

On transfer deadline day, when Tottenham beat off competition across the continent to sign Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain, it was regarded as a coup for a dynamic and dangerous forward.

The 26-year-old is contracted to the English outfit on a season-long loan deal with no option or obligation to buy.

Hailed as a “superstar” by German legend Lothar Matthaus, the £150k-per-week forward has hit highs and lows in recent years, but he impressed with Juventus last season and was the subject of interest from Spurs only in January, holding talks to sign him but ultimately missing out.

However, injuries have not been kind to the Les Bleus star across the opening months of the season, with the Champions League win over Villarreal the extent of his time on the field so far. Only 13 minutes of action is what he played.

His career has been somewhat up and down, but Kolo Muani undoubtedly has the talent and potential to succeed in the Premier League, though, aged 26, it’s important that he makes a convincing start to life at Tottenham when he does return from his current setback.

If not, the high-salary, injury-prone ace might find himself entering some conversations that liken him to Werner, whose Champions League triumph with Chelsea and prolific returns during his first spell with Leipzig led him to be regarded as an elite talent.

Kolo Muani, too, has enjoyed his most fruitful returns in Germany, hitting 23 goals and 17 assists across the 2022/23 campaign for Eintracht Frankfurt before earning a £73m transfer to the French capital, where the wheels stopped spinning.

Looking across the past 12 months, though, there’s little question that Kolo Muani has the talent to bring it all together. However, much more is needed. And the need at Tottenham for him to do just that is becoming quite significant as Richarlison and Dominic Solanke toil.

Final judgement will, of course, be reserved until the Frenchman has ample Premier League experience under his belt, but there’s little question that he has started off on the wrong footing.

His only saving grace is that Frank’s frontline have struggled for quality so far this season, and if he can rekindle the fitness and form that saw him hit such heights on loan with Juventus last term, Kolo Muani may be able to avoid falling toward a reputation as Tottenham’s next version of Werner.

Niko Kovac hints at 'creative break' for Serhou Guirassy amid Borussia Dortmund striker's goal drought

Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac is considering resting star striker Serhou Guirassy for the DFB-Pokal clash with Eintracht Frankfurt amid a month-long Bundesliga goal drought. While hinting at a "creative break," Kovac offered his full support to his "attack leader" and provided a positive injury update on other stars like Emre Can and Julien Duranville.

Kovac considers resting misfiring striker for cup clash

Kovac has confirmed he is considering giving Guirassy a "creative break" after the Guinean international's Bundesliga goal drought extended to over a month.

Speaking ahead of Dortmund's DFB-Pokal second-round clash against Eintracht Frankfurt, Kovac addressed the forward's recent struggles in front of goal but offered his full backing, highlighting the 29-year-old's importance as the team's "attack leader." Guirassy's last league goal came on 13 September, and his dip in form is a growing concern for the club.

With Dortmund set to visit Frankfurt on Tuesday evening, Kovac was asked directly about his plans for his number nine. The manager admitted that a rest is a genuine possibility as he weighs up the best way to help his striker rediscover his prolific early-season form.

"It's possible, of course, that Serhou will get a little creative break," Kovac stated during his pre-match press conference. "But I still have a bit of time to think about tomorrow's game and the next games."

The consideration comes after another frustrating outing for Guirassy in Dortmund's late 1-0 victory over Koln at the weekend, where Maximilian Beier scored the decisive goal.

AdvertisementgettyGuirassy's goal drought analysed

After a blistering start to his Borussia Dortmund career following his €18 million (£15m/$21m) summer transfer from Stuttgart, Guirassy has hit a difficult patch. His last goal in the Bundesliga came in a 2-0 win over Heidenheim on 13 September.

Since then, he has failed to find the net in four consecutive matches across all competitions. His season tally remains respectable, with four goals and one assist in seven Bundesliga appearances, and one goal in three Champions League fixtures. In total, he has scored six goals in 11 appearances for the club. However, the recent lack of production has become a prominent talking point, particularly as Dortmund look to compete on multiple fronts.

'He's our attack leader' – Kovac offers full support

Despite acknowledging the slump, Kovac was unequivocal in his support for Guirassy, praising the striker's work ethic and overall contribution to the team's attacking play. The manager stressed that a goal drought is a normal part of any forward's career and that the player's role remains central to his plans.

"Of course, I also see that he's not scoring any goals at the moment. But I still see how hard-working he is, that he's giving his all," Kovac explained. "It happens in the life of a striker that you don't convert balls that you would normally score. He's our attack leader—he's the one who initiates everything there. That's why I'm supporting him."

Can and Duranville recovery progressing

Aside from the striker situation, Kovac provided a positive update on two long-term absentees, captain Can and winger Duranville. Both players are making good progress on their respective roads to recovery, but neither will be available for selection until after the upcoming international break in mid-November.

Kovac insisted the club will not rush their returns, prioritising their long-term fitness. "But no pressure: We really want to have 100 percent healthy and fit players," the manager emphasised.

Chelsea have their next Hazard out on loan and he could soon rival Estevao

After a dramatic victory on Saturday night for Chelsea, everyone at Stamford Bridge is feeling optimistic once again.

At the weekend, the Blues beat champions Liverpool 2-1, thanks to an absolute rocket from Moisés Caicedo, before the winner came deep in stoppage time, with Marc Cucurella’s low cross turned home at the back post by Estêvão Willian.

Enzo Maresca was shown a red card following a José Mourinho-esque dash down the touchline, but he surely won’t mind too much, given that his side had yielded just a solitary point from their previous three Premier League matches, making this a much-needed statement victory.

Plenty of Chelsea players caught the eye, but is there a future young star, currently out on loan at… yes, you guessed it, who supporters should be even more excited about?

How Estêvão Willian has announced himself at Chelsea

As has been their want, Chelsea have signed countless young attacking players in the last three seasons, but few surely boast as much potential as Estêvão Willian.

Despite only celebrating his 18th birthday as recently as March, he has already earned seven senior caps for Brazil, scoring against Chile at the Maracanã last month, making 83 appearances for Palmeiras, scoring 27 goals and registering 15 assists.

With the Verdão, he won a Brasileirão title as well as firing the São Paulo-based side to the quarter-finals of last summer’s Club World Cup, on target against his future employers in defeat in Philadelphia in July, giving Chelsea fans an amuse-bouche of what he would bring.

Thus, by the time he arrived in West London, he did so with sky-high expectations; former Chelsea player and manager Roberto Di Matteo for one asserted that he will become one of the best players in the world.

Well, having been somewhat in and out of the team to date, Saturday’s last-gasp winner against Liverpool could be the moment Estêvão announces himself to the world, but do Chelsea have an even bigger talent waiting in the wings?

Chelsea's next Eden Hazard could rival Estêvão

Chelsea acquire so many attacking teenagers that one often wonders if they remember they’ve signed them all, but in Kendry Páez, they may have stumbled across a future world-beater.

In a deal agreed over two years ago, the 18-year-old arrived from Independiente del Valle this summer for a reported fee of £17.27m, before being immediately loaned out to Strasbourg; must’ve been some tough negotiations.

Despite his youthful age, he has already accumulated 20 caps for World Cup-bound Ecuador, scoring during just his second appearance for la Tricolor against Bolivia in La Paz, before also converting a Copa América penalty as his side beat Jamaica 3-1 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

His club performances in Ecuador, as well as in the Copa Libertadores, certainly caught the eye, with Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labelling him a “pure quality talent”, while Jack Manship of Total Football Analysis praised his ‘remarkable feat’ and ‘dazzling’ dribbling ability, outlining how he can be both deployed centrally or on either flank.

Páez has adapted quickly to life at BlueCo’s other club, Strasbourg, scoring his first Ligue 1 goal last month, heading home at Stade Jean-Bouin as Liam Rosenior’s side beat Paris FC 3-2 in the capital.

So, let’s assess his statistics in France so far this season.

As the table documents, it is early in both Páez career in general but also his time at Stade de la Meinau, how ever long that may be, but he is already having an impact for les Bleu et Blanc.

His numbers in terms of progressive carries and carries into the opposition’s penalty area are both particularly eye-catching, reminiscent of, arguably, Chelsea’s greatest ever attacker, another winger who made his name in Ligue 1.

Before moving to West London in 2013, Eden Hazard featured 194 times for Lille, scoring 50 goals and registering 53 assists, winning both the Ligue 1 title and Coupe de France with les Dogues in 2011.

He would go on to star for Chelsea, scoring 110 goals in total, many of which were spectacular and mesmerising, none more so than this solo effort against West Ham in 2019, his best and final season for the Blues, scoring 21 times as Maurizio Sarri’s side picked up the Europa League trophy in Baku.

Well, if Páez turns out to be half the player Hazard was, the £17m paid to secure the teenager’s signature will prove to be money well spent.

In wide attacking areas, Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens, Pedro Neto and match-winner Estêvão all featured during the victory over Liverpool, not forgetting the injured talisman Cole Palmer, but Páez could prove to be the best of the lot.

Man City simply too good for Borussia Dortmund as Niko Kovac & Co admit they were 'outplayed' by Pep Guardiola's world-class team

Manchester City proved far too strong for Borussia Dortmund in a commanding 4-1 Champions League win at the Etihad, with Erling Haaland once again scoring against his former club. Phil Foden’s brace drove Pep Guardiola’s side to a dominant victory, forcing Dortmund coach Niko Kovac and key players to acknowledge they are "not yet at that level".

Man City outclass Dortmund at the Etihad

City extended their formidable Champions League home form with a convincing 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund, handing the German side their first defeat in the competition. The English star Foden opened the scoring after 22 minutes before the Norwegian hero Haaland, captaining City for the night, once again punished his former club with a clinical finish for 2-0 at the end of the first half.

City controlled large portions of the match with their trademark tempo and positional play, leaving Dortmund frequently pinned deep and struggling to regain composure. Foden struck again early in the second half, capping another sweeping attacking phase to make it 3-0, before Waldemar Anton pulled one back for Dortmund in the 72nd minute. Any hope of a late push evaporated when Rayan Cherki restored City's three-goal cushion in stoppage time.

It was a performance that not only highlighted City’s depth and structure, but also showed the gulf between a side pushing for European glory and a Dortmund team still trying to establish consistency under Kovac.

AdvertisementAFPKovac and Co. admit city 'outplayed' Dortmund

Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck spoke bluntly about the defeat, telling : “We played well for the first 15 minutes, then we let City control the game for 20 minutes. They practically outplayed us at times. We deserved to lose because we simply weren't good enough.”

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel added that Dortmund started brightly but faded too quickly, saying: “I had the feeling there was a dip in our performance before the 1-0 goal. But I don't understand why. Up until then, we were playing really well… I think four goals in the end is too many.”

While their boss Kovac did not sugarcoat the result either, and heaped a lot of praises for the Premier League club: “We’re certainly a very good team in the Bundesliga and we reached the Champions League quarterfinals. But you have to say and acknowledge that this is a world-class team. We're not yet at that level, that has to be said. That's not a bad thing, because we have to be honest. We want to get there. To achieve that, we have to improve and work every day.”

Foden’s influence and Haaland’s familiar finishing

City’s attacking dominance again revolved around Foden’s intelligence between the lines and Haaland’s clinical finishing. Foden is increasingly becoming the rhythm-setter for Guardiola’s system, drifting centrally to overwhelm Dortmund’s midfield shape. His two goals reflected both his composure and City’s ability to exploit space once control was established.

Haaland, meanwhile, once again proved decisive against his old club, and with his goal, the 18th of his season in all competitions only highlighted how relentless his scoring form remains.

Kovac also pointed to City's sharper passing, more fluid movement and greater collective discipline as the key differences: "We didn't create the chances we would have liked. Then we were simply too passive, conceding three goals from outside the penalty area. A deserved defeat. You could see the difference. City's passing was much cleaner than ours. Against teams like this, you have to defend better."

AFPCity strengthen European push as Dortmund regroup

As Guardiola prepares his side for a crucial Premier League meeting with Liverpool next, the victory reinforced City’s return to fluency and sharpness in possession, traits that define their best phases under the Catalan manager.

City are now fourth in the Champions League table and looking increasingly like the title contenders of recent seasons.

Dortmund, meanwhile, must respond quickly to avoid stalling, as their next challenge comes in the Bundesliga against Hamburg, where the objective will be both physical recovery and restoring confidence. The defeat at the Etihad revealed areas Dortmund must address, defensive compactness, midfield resistance under pressure, and the capacity to maintain intensity across 90 minutes.

0 passes made: Rohl must drop Rangers flop who was worse than Aasgaard

Glasgow Rangers picked up their first Scottish Premiership win of the Danny Rohl era at Ibrox on Sunday when they swept Kilmarnock aside with a 3-1 victory.

The Light Blues did find themselves drawing 1-1 at the break, because of an equaliser from George Stranger, but a dominant second-half showing turned their afternoon around.

There was a first Gers goal for summer signing Youssef Chermiti, signed from Everton for £8m, to wrap up all three points, after strikes from Derek Cornelius and Danilo had the hosts in front.

The Portugal U21 international, who had not scored a club career goal since the 2022/23 campaign with Sporting, found the back of the net from the edge of the box to end his drought.

There was also a first goal of the Premiership season for Brazilian striker Danilo, who headed in the second goal, in what was just his second league start of the campaign, per Sofascore.

Rohl should be delighted with the nature of the win and with several of his players, but there were some stars who still failed to deliver on the pitch. Thelo Aasgaard was one of them.

Why Thelo Aasgaard was underwhelming against Kilmarnock

The summer signing from Luton lined up in the middle of the park alongside Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande, but failed to provide much in the way of quality in possession of the ball.

Per Sofascore, Aasgaard ended the match without any shots or key passes in 81 minutes on the pitch, which shows that he offered very little at the top end of the park.

The English-born attacking midfielder, to his credit, did complete all three of his attempted dribbles in the game, showing good composure under pressure in tight situations, but the end product in the business end of the pitch was not there.

That has, unfortunately, been a recurring theme of Aasgaard’s season with Rangers in the Premiership, aside from his brilliant performance against Dundee United for interim head coach Stevie Smith, when he scored a phenomenal solo goal.

As you can see in the table above, Aasgaard did not offer much of a threat as a scorer or a creator under Russell Martin, with no goals and one chance created in five appearances, and that was also the case for Rohl’s first match, with no shots, goals, key passes, or assists.

It is now down to the manager and the player to find a solution to his struggles for the Light Blues because his performance against Dundee United shows that the quality is there for him to be a real difference-maker for the Gers.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Whilst Aasgaard will be disappointed with how he performed in the middle of the park for the Gers, it is Bojan Miovski who should be dropped from the starting XI for his display, as he was even worse than the midfielder.

Why Danny Rohl should drop Bojan Miovski

The former Sheffield Wednesday head coach should ruthlessly ditch the summer signing from Girona from the starting line-up after a dismal performance against Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Miovski was hauled off at half-time by Rohl after an underwhelming first-half display that may leave the manager wondering about who his first-choice centre-forward will be, particularly after Danilo’s contribution.

The left-footed star did have the ball in the back of the net in the first-half, shortly after Kilmarnock’s equaliser, but it was later ruled out for offside because he was slow to get back in line with play.

That was his only moment of note in the half as the rest of his performance left a lot to be desired. Miovski did not get involved enough in the build-up phases of play and failed to impose any physicality on the Killie central defenders to hold the ball up for the Gers.

As you can see in the table above, the 26-year-old centre-forward was worse than the Norway international at Ibrox on Sunday, as he contributed virtually nothing to the team, whilst Aasgaard, at least, won half of his duels and was more reliable with the ball at his feet.

No goals, no assists, no shots, no chances created, no duels won, not even a pass completed. Losing the ball four times from five touches is simply not up to the standards that should be set for a Rangers number nine, which may be why Rohl decided to withdraw him at half-time.

Rangers need more from Miovski because he has not offered enough at the top end of the pitch since his move from Spanish side Girona in the summer transfer window.

Since his switch to Ibrox, the left-footed marksman has only scored two goals in ten appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants, once in the League Cup against Hibernian and once in the Premiership against Falkirk.

Miovski has scored one goal and missed three ‘big chances’ in six appearances in the Premiership to date, per Sofascore, which shows that he has not provided enough of a goal threat for a player who is in the team almost solely to score goals.

This is why Rohl should ruthlessly ditch the misfiring centre-forward from the starting line-up for the club’s trip to Hibernian in the Premiership in midweek.

Rohl must make "offensive" star first Rangers signing after Meghoma error

Danny Rohl must make this star his first Rangers signing after Jayden Meghoma’s performance on Thursday.

ByDan Emery Oct 25, 2025

Danilo and Chermiti, with their goals against Kilmarnock, have shown that they are ready to step up and deliver for the Scottish giants, which provides the manager with alternative options in that position.

14 goals in 19 games: West Ham are brewing 18-year-old Fullkrug upgrade

A week is a long time in football, and West Ham United are the perfect example of this.

Following their loss to Crystal Palace, it felt like everything was crashing down and that the club could even be relegated from the Premier League.

Yet now, Nuno Espírito Santo has replaced Graham Potter, the team fought back to earn a point away to Everton, and there is a sense that things could be on the up and up for the Hammers.

Moreover, while the club’s options up top are a problem, the academy might just be brewing the perfect solution.

West Ham's dire striker options

For his first game in charge of the club, Nuno opted to start Niclas Füllkrug up top, and it’s easy to understand why, as the German was one of the club’s big signings last summer and looked good during his stint with Borussia Dortmund.

However, as he has in most games for the club, the 32-year-old failed to deliver, and instead of cementing his place as a starter in the new manager’s mind, he probably made it clear that he needs to be moved on as soon as possible.

For example, during his 89 minutes of action, the centre-forward managed a single shot on target, lost possession nine times and lost 11 of his 16 duels.

Such a display is hardly a surprise, though, as since his move to the club, the Hanover-born poacher has made 26 appearances, in which he’s scored just three goals and provided two assists.

Unfortunately, the manager’s other senior number nine, Callum Wilson, isn’t much of an alternative either.

The Englishman has opened his account for the East Londoners, but last season, in 22 appearances for Newcastle United, he scored just a single goal – and the less said about his injury record, the better.

At the end of the day, West Ham desperately need to shift both Wilson and Füllkrug as soon as possible, but it’s not all doom and gloom, as the academy might have the perfect prospect to replace them.

The academy gem who could replace Füllkrug & Wilson

West Ham have a proud history of developing and promoting talented youth players, with the likes of Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Declan Rice all getting their first taste of senior football at the club.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

While he’s already had a small taste of senior football and might not quite live up to those names, a youngster who looks destined to make it into the Hammers’ first team at some point, and potentially replace Füllkrug, is Josh Landers.

The 18-year-old Scotsman joined the East Londoners’ academy from Hibernian in February of this year, Academy Manager Kenny Brown saying that his mentality and desire to improve “impressed everyone.”

Fortunately, the teenager has demonstrated the ability and qualities needed to accompany that mentality.

For example, in 15 appearances across the U18 and U21 sides last season, totalling 1047 minutes, the Innerleithen-born gem managed to put the ball in the back of the net nine times.

That works out to an impressive average of a goal every 1.66 games, or every 116.33 minutes, and as one analyst points out, the youngster has “hit the ground running.”

This season, the young prodigy has taken another step forward, playing exclusively with the U21s and already scoring five goals in just four games, suggesting he could be in for a massive season.

Ultimately, while it’ll take some time for him to get anywhere near the peak of his powers, Landers looks like a striker who could solve a big problem for West Ham, and potentially replace Füllkrug.

Man City now leading race to sign "generational talent" with approach planned

Manchester City are now leading the race to sign a “generational talent”, having moved ahead of Premier League rivals Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle United.

Man City looking to improve attack amid Haaland overreliance

There have been suggestions that Man City have been too overreliant on Erling Haaland so far this season, with the Norwegian way out in front as the top goalscorer in the Premier League, having already found the back of the net 11 times.

No other City player has scored more than one goal in the top flight, which is likely to be a concern for Pep Guardiola, with some of his other attacking options still learning on the job and yet to realise their true potential.

One such player is Savinho, with Guardiola saying: “Savio is a top player who can play both sides and he feels comfortable on both sides. I said last season, being [in your] first Premier League season, it’s not easy to play a lot of minutes.

“Just the moment to make the steps to be a decisive player and add goals and assists, especially goals he will be a top-class player. Top class. He needs to make that step.”

Jeremy Doku has also been inconsistent, registering two assists in the 3-0 victory over Man United but failing to make much of an impact in other matches, and the Blues are now looking to sign a new winger.

That is according to a report from The Boot Room, which states Man City have now moved into pole position in the race to sign Leicester City’s Jeremy Monga, having overtaken Man United, Newcastle and Chelsea.

City are now preparing a fresh approach to sign Monga, who has been a long-term target, with the 16-year-old putting himself in the shop window after emerging as a first-team regular for Leicester this season.

Scouts sent: Man City show interest in breakout star who'd cost near £70m

The Citizens believe they have the financial clamour to complete a deal.

The Foxes are powerless to stop the teenager from leaving, as he is unable to sign a professional deal until he turns 17 in June.

"Generational talent" Monga could be future star

Lauded as a “generational talent” by journalist Graeme Bailey in the aforementioned report, it is a testament to just how talented the youngster is that he has already forced his way into first-team contention at Leicester.

The starlet has already made 11 appearances in the Championship this season, picking up his first professional goal in a 2-1 defeat against Preston North End back in August.

Scout Jacek Kulig clearly believes the five-time England U19 international has a big future ahead too, describing him as “one of the most exciting U-17 talents in England.”

Given his age, Monga may be some way off challenging for a starting spot at a club like Man City, but he certainly looks like a top prospect, so it is exciting news they have moved into pole position in the race for his signature.

Ray Parlour names two surprise Arsenal stars as Arteta's "players of the season"

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has named his two players of the season so far, and they’re not who you would expect.

Arsenal looking to make it 10 games unbeaten against Crystal Palace

After putting Atlético Madrid to the sword on Tuesday night, Mikel Arteta is now looking to extend Arsenal’s impressive unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 games against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Arsenal 3-0 Nottingham Forest

Athletic Bilbao 0-2 Arsenal

Arsenal 1-1 Man City

Port Vale 0-2 Arsenal

Newcastle 1-2 Arsenal

Arsenal 2-0 Olympiacos

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

Fulham 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal 4-0 Atlético Madrid

Palace, who recently saw their own 19-game unbeaten streak come to an end against Everton before the international break, will be tricky customers for an Arsenal side who need every point they can muster.

Arteta’s side are in high spirits right now and look absolutely rock solid, having conceded just three goals in the Premier League so far this season, and they have plenty of stars to thank for their imperiousness.

Gabriel and William Saliba continue to cement their places among world football’s best centre-backs, with the former majorly contributing going forward as well. His threat from set plays has been a constant thorn in the opposition’s side since the very start of last season, and Gabriel’s carried this trend into 25/26 as teams struggle to find an answer.

Bukayo Saka, now that he’s returned from a hamstring problem, is back to his imperious best and caused Atlético all sorts of problems on the right-hand side, with Paul Merson saying he had the La Liga side “on toast”.

Before his knee injury, Noni Madueke was seriously impressing too, while goalkeeper David Raya was rewarded with new and improved terms recently amid his continued contribution to the team.

Declan Rice has also stood out as the linchpin of Arsenal’s midfield, with Martin Zubimendi doing a stellar job alongside the England international.

However, according to Parlour, two completely different names have shone above the rest.

Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori named Arsenal's players of the season so far

Speaking to EPL Index, Parlour claimed that Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber are quietly outshining everyone, even with Saliba and Gabriel at the heart of Arsenal’s rise to the Premier League summit.

Timber has been a rock at the back, showcasing defensive brilliance with more tackles on average per 90 in the Premier League than any other Arsenal player, according to WhoScored.

The Dutchman is also their best-performing player by average match rating (WhoScored), so the numbers absolutely support Parlour’s theory.

Timber really needs to start getting even more credit from pundits who arguably don’t mention him enough, but Arsenal recognise his stellar contribution amid reports they’re speaking to the right-back about a new and improved deal.

Calafiori, meanwhile, has kept budding teenage star Myles Lewis-Skelly out of the team with his very impressive performances at left-back so far, with the Italian averaging more tackles on average than any other defender in the team, including both Saliba and Gabriel.
