'Just stay calm…' South Africa fight fatalism as greatest prize draws near

Only 69 runs required for victory but history dictates South Africans will remain nervous to the last

Steyn: SA on the brink of a ‘fantastic achievement’

No team in world cricket, and arguably the whole of sport, has a more brutal relationship with the finishing line than South Africa. It’s cruel, but essential, to state this up front, much as Shukri Conrad, their impressively phlegmatic head coach, did when – with their place in the World Test Championship final up for grabs – they slipped to 19 for 3, chasing 148, against Pakistan in December.”Do you want to be remembered as chokers?” was the gist of Conrad’s message, as the cricket world – more engaged with this contest than could ever have been possible without the WTC’s over-arching narrative – began to snipe from the shadows in the prescribed manner. The players duly got their act together and hauled themselves over the line by two wickets, in what Conrad later coined “Camel classic”, in reference to the nerve-settling smoke break he’d had with a handful of his players.Related

Markram and Bavuma put South Africa in sight of glory

SA hope Markram's knock can be match-defining

If that Pakistan run-chase was a moment to savour, it is nothing compared to the euphoria that South Africa now know is within their reach, after a day of batting dominance at Lord’s that might have been beyond their most fevered hopes and desires. And yet, even now, they dare not make eye contact with the prospect, lest the whole edifice comes crashing down.Speaking at the close of play on day three, for instance, Ashwell Prince, South Africa’s batting coach, was asked about the magnitude of Temba Bavuma’s performance – on one leg for most of his unbeaten 65, while carrying one of the most unconscionable burdens in world sport, as he extended his unbroken third-wicket stand with Aiden Markram to 143.Prince started to respond with the sincerity that his captain’s heroics deserved, but checked himself mid-flow: “Maybe I should answer that question after the game.”And so, there can – and will – be no counting of chickens as South Africa’s day of destiny dawns at Lord’s on Saturday. Least of all against an Australia that are not simply the defending WTC champions, but – as their proud record in world finals can attest – as habitually certain of their ability to win from any situation as South Africa tend to be consumed by fatalism.”The messaging has been the same throughout,” Prince said. “Make them believe that they can do it, and then just step out the way and allow them to go and do it.”One of the things we said before the run-chase is: ‘the game will finish when it finishes’,” he said. “Whether that is tomorrow at lunchtime or whatever, the end of the match will take care of itself. For us, the most important thing is to remain in the moment. And from a batting point of view, that means play one ball at a time.”3:33

Prince: This team’s greatest strength is its unity

The calm within South Africa’s dressing room, Prince added, was a testament to Conrad’s unflustered approach to his role.”Shukri must get a lot of credit for that,” he said. “As soon as Aiden and Temba came up the stairs [after the third day], the first thing he said was, ‘guys, do the same as you do every night’. Don’t change a thing. Tomorrow morning, come and do the same warm-ups that you do every day. We obviously understand the magnitude of the situation and what’s at stake, but just stay calm and take it in your stride.”Just stay calm… it’s easier said than done, given what South Africa know of their fractured big-match psyche, but moreover what they know everyone else knows of it.Not that the team will be allowing the thoughts to fly so far ahead of the process, but it’s safe to assume that the ICC is already preparing its big-match montage to accompany South Africa’s winning moment… just as was the case in the last World Cup final to be staged at Lord’s, back in 2019.On that occasion, the tape memorably froze in the split-second before Jos Buttler whipped off the bails for the title-sealing run-out… and the ghosts of England’s many and miserable failures flooded into the picture. But, on this occasion, will it even be possible to exorcise so many all at once?2:56

Hayden lauds Bavuma’s ‘champion effort’

For there’s been a horror story for every format and every generation since South Africa’s readmission, up to and including their agonising loss to India – 30 runs needed from 30 balls – in their first T20 World Cup final appearance in Barbados last year. For the current scenario, however, there’s an even more on-the-nose shortcoming – arguably the founding father of the chokers tag. In Bridgetown once again, in South Africa’s very first Test match back in the fold, Kepler Wessels and Peter Kirsten had carried their side to 122 for 2, chasing 201 for victory, against a West Indies pace attack led by Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh.A rest day intervened – and premature celebrations were had. But, upon the resumption, those 79 runs were never remotely challenged, as South Africa’s remaining eight wickets were culled for just 25 runs. Against an attack featuring Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon – and in light of their first-innings collapse of 5 for 12 – history is primed to repeat itself if there’s even the slightest dropping of the guard.”There’s no desire to get ahead of ourselves,” Daniel Vettori, Australia’s assistant coach, said. “I think it’s one wicket, that’s the starting point. I don’t think there’ll be any thinking around how to get eight dismissals. It’ll be simply about getting one and seeing what can happen from there.”Perhaps this fatalism really does all come from the outside now. Prince acknowledged there was a bit of low-key superstition at play while South Africa’s crucial stand was growing – everyone staying seated then rushing to the bathroom at drinks, or when Bavuma’s hamstring required treatment – but overall, he insisted the pursuit of positives was the defining aspect of their day. Even during the frustrating morning session, while Starc and Hazlewood were adding 58 for the tenth wicket.2:23

Day 3 review: Markram’s knock could be career-defining

“I think there were signs, starting yesterday evening, when you’re sitting and watching the game, that all those type of things might be positive for us,” Prince said. “There was a little bit of frustration, obviously, with the ball dropping short of the cordon all the time. But if you reverse that when we bat, it’s a little sign that something might be in our favour. The stats suggest that day three might be the best for batting, and their Nos. 9, 10 and 11 were pretty comfortable against a pretty good bowling attack.”Whether the cricket can now take care of itself, only the fourth day’s events can tell. And yet, South Africa already know they have given a good account of themselves, through the brilliance of Kagiso Rabada’s nine wickets, and the indomitability of their senior batting pair. Regardless of the final act, they have arguably already shown that the ends justify the means, when it comes to their scrutinised route to this showpiece occasion.”There was no talk about proving anybody wrong,” Prince said. “Obviously there was a lot of talk about our route to the final, and who we played against, and people have their opinions about that. I can promise you now, we’d love to play against everybody more often, especially if there’s some big-money series that we can also make some money [from].”But the important thing, from Shukri’s point of view, is to make the players aware of how good they are, and if you take them lightly, you might come short. I’m sure Australia wouldn’t have approached the game in that manner. But perhaps the rest of the world, watching the final or predicting what’s going to happen in the final, might have had that opinion.”

Each American League Contender's Best and Worst September Performer

Major League Baseball is finally in the home stretch of the 2025 season. A long, 162-game campaign will come down to the final month of the season as teams jockey for playoff position. Players who can pull their weight in September will be incredibly valuable as the final days tick off the season's calendar.

As we did with the National League, let’s take a look at the players with the best and worst September track records for each American League contender. We've lumped October numbers from the regular season into these calculations since the sample sizes are too small to warrant their own category.

There are some surprises in here, but many of the best players step up with the season on the line.

Detroit Tigers

Best: Tarik Skubal

Skubal is cruising to his second straight AL Cy Young Award, and based on his track record, there are no signs he'll slow down in September. The 28-year-old has made 19 appearances (18 starts) in the month during his six-year career and is 6–3 with a 2.82 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 113 strikeouts against 17 walks in 92 2/3 innings. Opposing hitters are slashing .184/.230/.326 against him in that time. That .556 OPS against is his second-best of any month, .002 points below May.

Worst: Kyle Finnegan

The Tigers added Finnegan to the back of their bullpen at the trade deadline, and it has paid off as he has yet to allow a run in his first 12 appearances with the team while going 3–0 and earning four saves. But the 33-year-old reliever does not have a good track record in the season's final month.

In 58 career appearances in September and October, Finnegan is 3–10 with a 5.85 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 59 strikeouts against 30 walks in 60 innings. He has allowed 11 home runs, opponents are slashing .289/.375/.477, and his FIP of 5.24 is not encouraging. It is his worst month by far, so Detroit will have to keep an eye on him as the season winds down.

Toronto Blue Jays

Best: Bo Bichette

Bichette is having arguably the best season of his career at the plate, and he's entering what has historically been his best month. In his seven-year career, Toronto's shortstop has played in 116 September/October games and is slashing .323/.363/.526 with 20 home runs, 77 RBIs and a 144 wRC+. His .890 OPS is his best in any month by 32 points, and his slugging percentage is also his best in any month.

As the Blue Jays attempt to close out the season by winning the AL East, Bichette could be their key down the stretch.

Worst: Jeff Hoffman

Hoffman has had mixed results as Toronto's closer in the first year of a three-year, $33 million deal. He enters September 8–6 with a 5.02 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 29 saves in 36 opportunities. Given his history, things might be about to get worse.

Hoffman has made 55 September appearances during his 10-year career and is 3–5 with a 5.79 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 104 strikeouts against 51 walks in 91 2/3 innings. Opposing hitters are slashing .272/.370/.508 against him for an OPS of .878, and he's been especially homer-prone, allowing 21. And it’s not like he’s been unlucky; his FIP in the month is 5.80. Maybe he can turn it around this year, but it is traditionally his worst month of the season.

Houston Astros

Best: Yordan Alvarez

Alvarez is having a forgettable season after missing nearly four months with a fracture in his hand. But he has returned just in time to play in a month when he usually thrives. Traditionally, during his career, Alvarez crushes September. In 125 career games, he's slashing .296/.395/.601 with 32 home runs and 83 RBIs. His .996 OPS is the second-best for a month, and his 171 wRC+ is third among active players, behind Aaron Judge and Seiya Suzuki. The Astros' lineup just got a big boost with his return.

Worst: Jeremy Peña

Peña's breakout season at the plate may soon hit a roadblock as the calendar turns to September. The 27-year-old has played in 80 September/October games in his career and is slashing .268/.302/.390 in them, with seven home runs, 30 RBIs and 64 strikeouts against 12 walks. He carries a .692 OPS and a 95 wRC+ with a wOBA of .301. He has been anemic with the bat in the season's final month but given his season so far he could change that trend this year.

New York Yankees

Best: Aaron Judge

I'm going to shock you: Aaron Judge is the Yankees' best hitter in September. The two-time MVP is great during every month, but he turns it on late in the season. During his 193 career September/October games, he is slashing .275/.409/.610, with 61 home runs and 135 RBIs. His wRC+ of 174 in September is the best among all active players, as is his wOBA of .419. Expect a great month to close what has been another unbelievable season for the Yankees slugger.

Worst: Anthony Volpe

Volpe has faced a ton of criticism for his play this season and, if history is any guide, that won't quiet down this month. He has traditionally been terrible at the plate after the calendar turns to September.

In 51 career games during the season's final month, Volpe is batting .169 with an on-base percentage of .223, while slugging .235. That's an anemic OPS of .458, by far his worst in any month. He has also struck out 57 times against 13 walks and has only two home runs and 12 RBIs in those games. His wRC+ is a comically low 28. Aaron Boone might want to find some days off for the 24-year-old this month if he doesn’t end up outright benching him.

Boston Red Sox

Best: Aroldis Chapman

Alex Bregman could have fit here, but Chapman has been dominant during September throughout his 16-year career. The 37-year-old has made 144 appearances and boasts a 2.14 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a whopping 226 strikeouts against 72 walks in 138 2/3 innings. Opposing hitters are slashing .140/.261/.206, and the .467 OPS against him is his lowest in any month. His FIP of 2.20 is also outstanding. Chapman has been brilliant for the Red Sox this season, and that should continue as we head into September.

Worst: Jarren Duran

Over the past two seasons, Duran has become one of Boston's most important players, but September has easily been his worst month. While he doesn't have an extensive track record, what exists is pretty brutal. In 28 career September/October games, Durant is slashing .241/.285/.302, with no home runs and two RBIs. His .586 OPS is 133 points lower than any other month. And his numbers are that low despite a batting average of balls in play of .318.

Seattle Mariners

Best: Julio Rodríguez

Rodriguez has been inconsistent thus far in his MLB career, but he’s been excellent during the final month of the season. / Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images

The Mariners are chasing the Astros as they seek to win their first AL West title since 2001. Luckily, they have one of the best late-season hitters in baseball on their roster. In 74 career September/October games, Julio Rodríguez is hitting .304 with a .346 on-base percentage while slugging .573. He has 22 home runs, his most in any month, and 48 RBIs while posting an OPS of .919 and a wRC+ of 158. We'll see if he can help lift Seattle over Houston.

Worst: Bryan Woo

Bryan Woo is having a great season for the Mariners. He enters the season's final month with a 12–7 record, 2.95 ERA, and a 0.95 WHIP, but he's now entering his worst month.

In 10 career September/October appearances, Woo is 5–3 with a 4.68 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 55 strikeouts in 50 innings pitched. Opponents are posting a .736 OPS against him in those games, and he's allowed 10 home runs, while his FIP is an elevated 4.81. Seattle will need him to reverse his historical trend down the stretch.

Kansas City Royals

Best: Mike Yastrzemski

The Royals landed Yastrzemski from the Giants at the trade deadline, and it's possible they added him due to his late-season prowess. September has traditionally been his best month. In 155 games, he is slashing .256/.342/.488 with 25 home runs and 73 RBIs. His .831 OPS is the best of any month during his career, and his wRC+ of 127 and wOBA of .355 are excellent. He'll need to step up if the Royals are going to make up ground in the AL wild-card chase.

Worst: Maikel Garcia

Maikel Garcia is having the best season of his three-plus-season career, setting career highs in home runs (15), batting average (.298), OPS (.837) and WAR (5.1). That said, he's now entering a month in which he's been horrendous during his career. In 49 career games during September/October, Garcia has slashed .217/.287/.273 with no home runs, 11 RBIs and 45 strikeouts. That OPS of .560 is his lowest in a month by 73 points.

Twins Fans Stick Around to Chant 'Sell the Team’ During Postgame Show After Loss

On Thursday night the Twins played their first game at Target Field since the Pohlad family announced they would not be selling the team. Minnesota proceded to go out and lose to the Tigers in extra innings with manager Rocco Baldelli getting ejected following a colorful argument about whether or not a foul tip was caught or not.

The emotions from the loss, coupled with the recent news about the team's ownership situation, had the words "sell the team" fresh on everyone's mind and that became especially apparent during the team's postgame show where fans could be heard loudly chanting the request.

The Twins entered the season with a mid-range payroll, well above teams like the Marlins and Athletics, but far behind real contenders who are spending about twice as much each season in an attempt to put a competitive team on the field.

Two years removed from their last postseason appearance, Minnesota is currently 57-64, seven games out of the wild card.

It's a simple recipe for fan unrest.

Supercomputer predicts every 2025/26 Premier League game and final table

With nine games played in the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, we’ve already seen the champions’ crown slip, two sackings from one club and one Manchester United fan may just be closing in on a much-needed haircut.

But there’s still plenty more to come and an AI Supercomputer has now predicted how the final table will look come May, using data from the first nine game-weeks to predict every result and the final standings.

Relegation battle

It’s been a refreshing season down at the bottom. As things stand, none of the three promoted sides sit inside the bottom three and all have reached 10 points or above already.

For context of just how important that achievement is, Southampton finished bottom with 12 points after 38 games last season, whilst it took Ipswich and Leicester City all season to reach 22 and 25 points respectively. Sunderland have particularly thrived and sit as high as fourth in the Premier League with 17 points to their name. After nine games, it’s hard to see a world in which they don’t avoid the drop.

The Supercomputer seems to agree with how impressive the promoted sides have been so far this season and believes that, for just the fifth time in Premier League history, all three will avoid the drop. That leaves West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest – the current bottom three – in the dropzone at the end of the season.

Away from relegation trouble, the supercomputer has predicted some comfortable campaigns for Brentford, Everton, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace. Opinions will differ around those clubs whether a mid-table finish would be satisfactory, but Brentford should certainly take hold of that with both hands.

In their first season without Thomas Frank in the Premier League, many predicted the Bees to go down and although there’s still every chance that happens, victory over Liverpool proved just the positive direction that Keith Andrews is taking them. Not only has he steadied the ship, but he has also added his own pragmatic style in West London.

Look away now Chelsea fans, because your top four spot is up for grabs. According to the Supercomputer, the Blues are in for another frustrating campaign after spending big once more in the summer.

Despite impressing at times, Enzo Maresca’s side have largely remained inconsistent and that could leave them scrapping away to stay in the top six altogether. The same can be said for Newcastle United, who have impressed defensively but remained blunt going forward in the absence of one of the world’s best forwards in Alexander Isak.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have been on the up lately and are just two wins away from five on the bounce. After finishing in the bottom half last season, the Supercomputer believes that Ruben Amorim’s side will earn their place back inside the top six and above Chelsea.

From the glory of champions, the most glaring prediction that the Supercomputer has made centres around Liverpool’s fall from grace. It does believe that the Reds will finish inside the top four, but as many as 17 points behind league leaders Arsenal in a title defence to forget for Arne Slot. Given that they’re currently winless in four league games, however, the Dutchman may just take that final table.

As for Tottenham Hotspur, from the chaos of Ange-ball, they’re expected to rise to as high as third in the league under Frank. The Lilywhites have started in excellent fashion under the Dane and could yet continue that to earn their way back into the top four.

For the Gunners, meanwhile, glory may finally be on the horizon. They’ve waited over two decades to lift the Premier League title again and have been forced to applaud both Liverpool and Manchester City in recent years. Now, at long last, it could finally be Mikel Arteta’s year. The Supercomputer has even gone as far as to predict that they’ll win it by 13 points.

Leeds offer terms to teenager to beat Dortmund & Leverkusen to his signature

Leeds United have long established themselves as a club who promote young talent from within, but they may now have a battle on their hands to keep an exciting gem at Elland Road.

Farke sets out aims as pressure mounts in Leeds dugout

After two-and-a-half years in the dugout at Leeds, Daniel Farke had led his side to the promised land of the Premier League and will hope they can retain their top-flight status despite a mixed start to life against the elite.

Speaking to Sky Germany, the former Norwich City boss made clear that his intention in Yorkshire is to leave the club in a better state than he found it, something everyone will be able to see he has carried out with distinction.

He said on podcast Speilmacher, recounting his time at SV Lippstadt: “Back then at SV Lippstadt, it was thanks to my old president, because he knew I had respect for horses. So he thought of it as a sort of ‘Lap of Honor’ and decided I had to ride a horse.

“Yes, back then, my hair was a bit longer, and there was a bit of a resemblance. How I would leave this stadium here, I have no idea. Hopefully, in a positive way. My aim is always to leave the club better than I found it. Of course, I would be happy if it’s in a positive way. But in this business, you never know. So I hope it’s a good farewell.”

Farke must finally bench Struijk to unleash "monstrous" Leeds talent

This Leeds ace could help them to 3 points against the Hammers

ByJoe Nuttall Oct 24, 2025

With Archie Gray and Harry Gray two examples of bristling Thorp Arch talent, among other academy graduates, there is hope that the Whites can continue to breed prodigies to serve the club in the long-term, though they may need to fight to retain one of their latest stars.

Leeds offer new terms to youngster Sam Alker

According to Leeds United News in conversation with Graeme Bailey, Leeds starlet Sam Alker is on the radar of Newcastle and the Whites may be powerless to prevent his exit due to his status as a domestic player.

Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are also reported to be in the conversation. However, the midfielder is only 16 and won’t be able to move to a club in mainland Europe until his 18th birthday. On the flip side, English clubs could sign him straight away.

Bailey said on his situation: “I’m told there is a bit of interest in him. I’ve only heard domestic interest. I did hear Newcastle are one of the ones in for him. Alker can’t move abroad until 18. Leeds’ real fear is domestically. Dortmund or Leverkusen, that doesn’t do him any favours.”

Leeds have offered him terms, but find themselves waiting for more news on his future because he cannot yet sign a professional deal. They will hope Harry Gray’s contract renewal at Elland Road can provide an example to follow, though Alker has some key factors to weight up before committing his future.

For now, Whites supporters will need to bide their time, but it is clear the club are doing all they can to ensure he remains in Yorkshire.

Mets' Jonah Tong and His Mother Both Had Memorable MLB Debuts

Jonah Tong made his major league debut on Friday night starting for the Mets against the Marlins at Citi Field. Tong went five innings, gave up six hits and just one earned run and left with the home team leading 12-4.

Tong finished his night by striking out his sixth batter on a very questionable call, but no one in Queens—including home plate umpire Andy Fletcher—seemed to care that his final pitch was low. All that really mattered was that the Mets got to put another maple leaf K up on the scoreboard.

And no one was more excited after that final strikeout than Tong, who walked off the mound screaming. Except maybe his mom who cheered, hid her face in her hands and whistled to show her support from the stands.

Tong's parents, Alex and Karen, were interviewed earlier in the game and they seem awesome. Mom talked about what it was like watching her son pitch, told the story of how Jonah kept working on his craft during the pandemic in Canada and was also startled by a foul ball as she spoke.

On Thursday, Tong told reporters about the experience of telling his mother he had been called up, and said that he had held it together until she told him to "get out." Then he cried for an hour.

If the Mets can make a run and Tong can be a part of it, this seems like a family that New York (and the internet) might really enjoy getting to know better. Friday night was certainly a quality start.
